MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 match against Oklahoma, today, at the Gregg Wadley Indoor, in Norman, Oklahoma.
“Overall, we had a tough day on the courts,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We had some bright spots in the match overall, but there is still a lot of work left to be done this season. We want to be at our best for the conference tournament, and right now, we are focusing on the upcoming match against Iowa State.”
The Mountaineers (6-7, 0-2) fell behind early when sophomore Carolina Lewis and freshman Paula Goetz dropped a 6-2 decision on court one to OU’s Lily Miyazaki and Emma Devine. On court two, the sophomore duo of Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez suffered a 6-2 setback to OU’s Zita Engbroks and Christiana Brigant to give the Sooners a one-point match advantage.
In singles action, the Sooners (7-7, 2-1) tallied three straight victories at the No. 6, No. 5 and No. 2 slots to secure the win over the Mountaineers.
Freshman Abigail Rosiello fell to OU’s Malene Stripp in straight sets at the No. 6 slot (6-0, 6-2). At No. 5 singles, Martinez dropped her match against OU’s Brigante with a score of 6-3, 6-1.
The match clinching point came at the No. 2 position, where sophomore Carolina Lewis stumbled against OU’s No. 84 Devine with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
West Virginia will return home for the first time in four weeks for a match against Iowa State on Saturday, March 26, inside Ridgeview Racquet Club. The contest is set to begin at 11 a.m. The Mountaineers will sport pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness.
