MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For what is believed to be the first time in program history, the West Virginia University women’s tennis team checks in at No. 75 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll.
The WVU women’s tennis program began in 1974 under former coach Martha Thorn with the ITA women’s rankings dating back to 1984.
“I am happy for the team to receive this recognition,” third-year coach Miha Lisac said. “The student-athletes have put in a good amount of work this year, and it is great to see the results of that work. We are focused on getting better one week at a time, and we are dedicated to making progress.”
Ohio State jumped one spot to No. 1, while California and North Carolina check in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Michigan dropped one spot to No. 4, while Texas Tech climbed three spots to No. 5.
Duke moved up three spots to No. 6, while Georgia, Vanderbilt, LSU and Oklahoma State round out the top 10.
In its last weekend of competition, West Virginia edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle on Feb. 27, in Ithaca, New York, inside the Reis Tennis Center, to tie the all-time series record at two apiece. West Virginia defeated Cornell for the first time since 1995, as the Mountaineers captured the doubles point and three singles victories over the Big Red to claim the match.
West Virginia travels to College Park, Maryland, for a nonconference match against the Terrapins on Saturday, March 5. The match is set to begin at noon.
