MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell in its Big 12 Conference opener to No. 13 Oklahoma State, 4-0, today, at the Greenwood Tennis Center, in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
“OSU played well today, and the credit goes to them,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We definitely had some positives that we can take away from today’s match going into tomorrow’s match against Oklahoma, but we also have to step up in other areas.”
The Mountaineers (6-6, 0-1 Big 12) started off slow against the Cowgirls, as the team dropped back-to-back doubles matches at the No. 3 and No. 2 slot. Sophomore Habiba Shaker and freshman Abigail Rosiello suffered a 6-2 setback on court three to OSU’s Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic. The sophomore duo of Yvon Martinez and Lyn Yuen Choo also fell to OSU’s Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari by a score of 6-3 on court two.
West Virginia’s 1-0 deficit grew in singles action, as Choo fell to OSU’s Mari in straight sets at the No. 4 slot (6-1, 6-1). Martinez also dropped straight sets to OSU’s Katarina Stresnakova by a score of 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
Today’s match-clinching point came at the No. 6 position. On court six, Rosiello made her Mountaineer debut in dual-match play. The Morgantown native dropped a 6-3, 6-0 loss to OSU’s Maria Alvarez, as Rosiello competed against a Big 12 opponent for the first time in her career.
Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
The Mountaineers will face Oklahoma (6-7, 1-1 Big 12) on Sunday, March 20, at the Headington Family Tennis Center, in Norman, Oklahoma. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
In its last dual-match competition, Oklahoma captured a 4-0 victory over Iowa State on Friday, March 18, at the Headington Family Tennis Center, in Norman, Oklahoma.
