Throughout the year, sophomore Carolina Lewis will share her thoughts on the 2015-16 women’s tennis season, what it’s like being a Division I student-athlete at West Virginia and what makes being a Mountaineer so special.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - We're already half way through the 2016 season, but we have our first pair of Big 12 matches this weekend against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, which is a great opportunity for us.
The last two weeks, we've dropped matches against Maryland and Marshall. The outcome of those matches were not ideal, and it had an effect on all of us. We want to use these Big 12 matches as a fresh start. We want to refocus on the goals we had at the beginning at the year, and we want to come out with a positive attitude. The nonconference matches have helped prepare us in an immense. We used those matches as learning opportunities, and we want to move forward, especially in doubles play.
Last year was the first time that I participated in Big 12 competition. I had no idea what to expect, especially with the clinch format - that took me a while to get used to. Clinch format means that as soon as one team reaches four points, the competition is over. If other courts are still competing then the matches are halted.
This year, we all know what to expect, and we can help show the freshmen just how competitive this conference really is.
