WVU Closes Nonconference Slate at Marshall
March 10, 2016 10:58 AM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closes its nonconference schedule at in-state foe Marshall on Friday, March 11, in Huntington, West Virginia. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. inside the Huntington Tennis Club.
“Marshall is another good team that will come out ready to play,” third-year coach Miha Lisac said. “We have competed against Marshall before, and we know what to look for and what to expect. Overall, they are a solid team that will not make the match easy on us by any means. We are looking to rebound in doubles against Marshall, and we are looking to continue to make strides in our singles play. It will be a battle, and we will need to use the things we have learned from the past matches to turn the battle in our favor.”
West Virginia (6-4) and Marshall (4-8) will meet for the 37th time in program history, as the Mountaineers hold a 21-16 advantage over the Thundering Herd. Last season, West Virginia fell short by a score of 5-2 in a dual match against then-ranked No. 70 Marshall on March 8, 2015, inside Ridgeview Racquet Club.
Most recently, one Mountaineer saw action against the Thundering Herd in singles competition at the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regionals (Oct. 15-17). In the qualifying singles bracket, junior Kaja Mrgole bested Marshall’s Marija Bogicevic in a three-set battle to advance to the round of 16. Mrgole claimed the first set, but dropped the second. She prevailed in set three, only giving up three games, to claim the match (7-6, 4-6, 6-3).
In its last weekend of competition, West Virginia fell to Maryland by a score of 5-2 on March 5, in College Park, Maryland, inside the Tennis Center at College Park. In singles action, the Mountaineers claimed matches in straight sets over the Terrapins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions.
Sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team in singles play with an overall record of 9-1. Freshman Paula Goetz owns six singles wins, followed by sophomore Carolina Lewis with five. Senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo have four singles victories apiece. The doubles tandem of Barrett and Shaker holds a team-best 8-2 mark at the No. 1 slot this season.
Marshall has lost six consecutive matches, dropping its last two contests against Florida International (March 4) and VCU (March 6) both by 4-3 scores, in Huntington.
Derya Turhan is ranked No. 12 in the ITA Atlantic Region and ranks No. 122 in this week’s ITA singles rankings. Turhan leads the Thundering Herd in singles play with an overall record of 8-2 at the No. 1 position, followed by Rachael Morales with seven singles victories at the No. 2 position. Turhan and Morales also pace the team with a 5-4 mark at the No. 1 doubles slot this season.
