DeAngelo Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following his performance against Pitt, junior Tony DeAngelo has been named the West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
DeAngelo rallied for a thrilling 10-7 win over Pitt’s Nick Zanetta at 141 pounds to help the Mountaineers upset the No. 17 Panthers, 18-12, in the 61st Backyard Brawl. Zanetta led 2-0 after a first period takedown, but DeAngelo scored the reversal in the second to tie the score 2-2.
After Zanetta took injury time midway through the second period, DeAngelo opted to re-start in the defensive position. Zanetta picked up four back points for a 6-2 advantage after five minutes of action. The two started the third on their feet, with DeAngelo registering a takedown to make it a two-point bout, down 6-4. Zanetta escaped, but DeAngelo scored another takedown and added four near fall points late in the third to claim the win. His decision put WVU up 6-3 at the time and was the first of three straight wins for the Mountaineers, who claimed six of ten bouts in the 18-12 upset.

Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia recorded a 69-42 win at Texas Tech last Tuesday … Lanay Montgomery tallied 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win … Bria Holmes added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Arielle Roberson netted a season-high 10 points … in the win over Kansas State, West Virginia shot 57.8 percent from the field en route to a 64-44 win over the Wildcats in the annual Play 4Kay pink game … Holmes inked her second double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds … Teana Muldrow and Katrina Pardee each added 10 points … A crowd of 4,328 attended Saturday’s game marking the 16th largest crowd to watch the Mountaineers at WVU Coliseum.
Notes: The Mountaineers returned to the AP Top 25 poll on Monday at No. 24 … this marks the third week that West Virginia has appeared in the AP Poll this season … the Mountaineers ranked No. 25 in the poll on Jan. 18 and No. 24 in the poll on Jan. 25 ... Holmes leads the team and ranks third in the league with 16.8 points per game … Holmes remains the Big 12’s active leading scorer and is third at West Virginia with 1,814 points … Lanay Montgomery reached the 200-block plateau with her pair of deflections against Kansas State on Saturday… WVU exceeded its regular season win total of 17 last season with a victory on Saturday over Kansas State … the Mountaineers matched the Big 12 Conference win total of seven victories last season … West Virginia is two wins away from recording its 10th 20-win season under coach Mike Carey … WVU has held 20 of 24 opponents this season under 38.3 percent shooting from the field … the Mountaineers’ 57.8 shooting percentage vs. K-State was the highest for the team in a Big 12 game this season … WVU has eclipsed 50 percent shooting five times this season … the Mountaineers are 18-2 when leading at halftime and 16-1 and outrebounding their opponents … West Virginia is 13-3 when three or more players have reached double-figures.

This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers remain on the road this week for back-to-back contests … West Virginia will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, as the team squares off against Liberty on Feb. 12, followed by a match against No. 48 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia on Feb. 14 … Friday’s match will begin at 2 p.m., while Sunday’s match against the Hokies will begin at 10 a.m.
Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia improved to 3-1 with a 5-2 victory over Akron at the LaTuchie Tennis Center … the Mountaineers posted their third consecutive win of the season, while handing the Zips (4-1) their first loss of the season … WVU now holds a 9-4 all-time series advantage in dual match competition against Akron.
Notes: Sophomore Habiba Shaker holds a team-best 4-0 mark at the No. 2 singles slot, while senior Hailey Barrett and Shaker hold a perfect 4-0 mark at the No. 1 doubles slot … for the first time this season, the Mountaineers won all three doubles matches in dual-match competition … the all-time series record against Liberty is tied at 2-2, as West Virginia looks to take a one-match advantage this Friday … West Virginia is 4-18 all-time against Virginia Tech.
Coach Miha Lisac following the match against Akron: “We had a fast start in doubles today, as we were able to close out the doubles point for the third straight match. Habiba (Shaker), Carolina (Lewis) and Paula (Goetz) played efficient matches today. Akron is a team that will fight back and battle. We are happy with the win, but we will also take things from today’s matches and improve for next week.”
This Week in Gymnastics: The No. 24-ranked Mountaineers return to the road this weekend and travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for a meet at No. 4 Alabama on Sunday, Feb. 14 … the contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. EST inside Coleman Coliseum.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU (2-4, 0-3) scored back-to-back 195.0+ marks in road Big 12 Conference matches this weekend … the Mountaineers fell, 195.3-195.2, at Iowa State, on Feb. 5, and 197.9-195.25, at No. 2 Oklahoma, on Feb. 7 … two Mountaineers earned event victories at ISU, with sophomores Zaakira Muhammad scoring a career-high 9.9 on vault and Jordan Gillette tallying a career-best 9.875 on beam … Muhammad also had WVU’s best finish at OU, as she and freshman Kirah Koshinski tied for third place on vault with 9.85s.
Notes: The Mountaineers tallied season highs on vault (49.075) and beam (48.975) at ISU … WVU has earned 49.0 or better on vault in four of its five meets this season … the Mountaineers defeated ISU on vault (49.075-48.7) and beam (48.975-48.925) … WVU fell to OU on all four events … senior Jaida Lawrence matched her season-high vault score of 9.825 in both meets … several Mountaineers made collegiate event debuts this weekend: sophomore Jordan Gillette (bars) and freshmen Sarah Moore (vault) and Tiara Wright (floor) … seniors Melissa Idell and Audrey Tolbert tallied career-high beam marks of 9.825 (at ISU) and 9.8 (at OU) this weekend … WVU did not compete a gymnast in the all-around in either meet.
This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers will compete at the High Point Team Challenge in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Thursday, Feb. 11, at the JDL Fast Track.
Last Week in Track and Field: WVU competed at the two-day 12th annual Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, Feb. 5-6 ... the Mountaineers posted four prominent victories throughout the weekend, in the pole vault blue division, the 4,000 distance medley relay gold division, the high jump blue division and in the 800 meter run blue division ... the team also took seven top-five finishes ... on the second day WVU added four season-best times and two career-best times ... the first victory came from sophomore Madelin Gardner in the pole vault blue division ... Gardner posted a season-best and indoor career-high mark of 3.96 meters ... West Virginia earned its second win of the night in the 4,000 distance medley relay, thanks to sophomore Maggie Drazba, sophomore Bria Welker, senior Kelly Williams and junior Brianna Kerekes ... the team crossed the finish line in 11:59.02 ... senior Hannah Stone won the high jump blue division, marking a season best 1.71 meters to give WVU its third victory ... the final win came from sophomore Rebecca Wendt in the 800 meter run, finishing in 2:13.17, while junior Brianna Kerekes also competed, placing fifth (2:14.86).
Notes: Gardner’s mark in the pole vault improved .26 meters from her previous-best mark of 3.70 meters, while moving to the No.3 spot on WVU’s all-time indoor performance list ... Jean-Baptiste improved .33 meters in the long jump from her previous career-best mark ... Diehl improved 4.04 seconds from her previous best time in the 5,000 meters ... Wendt recorded a career-best time in the 800 meter run and improved 6.28 seconds from her previous best ... freshman Chaqieta Robinson competed in the 400 meter dash blue division, finishing in 13th with a season-best time of 59.24. Robinson improved 2.64 seconds from her previous best time of 1:01.88 ... Plombon shed .09 seconds off her previous best time in the 3,000 meters .... Jean-Baptiste placed eighth in the 60 meter hurdles gold division prelims in a season-best time 8.88, advancing her to the finals where she placed sixth (8.91) ... in the pole vault, senior Tori Bertrand finished ninth with a season-best mark of 3.80 meters.
Coach Sean Cleary after the Akron Invitational: “We had a productive meet. I was pleased with the way we competed this weekend. A few within the group know that they are better than they performed this weekend, but overall we had a successful weekend. We have a very quick turnaround next week, and therefore we need to go home and really focus on the school and recovery before hitting the road.”
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers have two weeks off from competition before they compete for a Big 12 title at the 2016 Big 12 Championship, Feb. 24-27, in Austin, Texas.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia diving team competed at the James Madison Invitational on Feb. 6, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, to conclude the regular season ... in addition to the Dukes, the Mountaineers competed against Virginia, Towson and Ohio at the Savage Natatorium ... the WVU men finished 2-3-4 in both events ... sophomore Michael Proietto led WVU on 1-meter with a 304.70 to place second, while sophomore Alex Obendorf was second on 3-meter with a 318.15 ... Proietto was third on 3-meter with a 300.75 and McHenry was fourth with a 298.60. Behind Proietto on 1-meter, Obendorf posted a 304.70 to finish third while McHenry was fourth with a 300.90 ... for the Mountaineer women, senior Lindsay Schmidt led the way with a 275.95 on 3-meter to finish third ... she was joined in the top 15 by freshman Julia Calcut, who earned a 244.50 and freshman Mary Smith with a 224.75 to finish 14th ... on the 1-meter board, Schmidt’s 255.80 was good for fifth, while Calcut again finished ninth, with a 239.20, and freshman Averly Hobbs notched a 236.85 for a 10th-place finish.
Diving coach Michael Grapner on the JMU Invitational: “Today was a very good meet all around. The men really capitalized on the opportunity to compete against a strong team in our zone and finished 2-3-4 in both events. For the women, Lindsay was consistent and competitive on both boards. The other girls, as freshmen, are still figuring it out and learning how to compete at this level. I’m pleased with all of the divers and looking forward to training the next two weeks in preparation for the Big 12 Championship. We just need to stay focused and healthy.”
This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers will travel to Annapolis, Maryland, for their last Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) matchup of the season against No. 14 Navy on Thursday, Feb. 11 … the match is set to begin at 1:30 p.m., inside the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia tallied its 11th straight victory and 25th consecutive win at home with a 4713-4674 triumph over No. 3 Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 6, inside the WVU Rifle Range … the Mountaineers (11-0, 7-0 GARC) won both disciplines, outshooting the Wildcats in smallbore, 2337-2312, and air rifle, 2376-2362.
Notes: The Mountaineers took both discipline wins, as senior Garrett Spurgeon shot 587 (193 kneeling, 199 prone, 95 standing) smallbore and freshman Ginny Thrasher shot 599 (100, 99, 100, 100, 100, 100) air rifle to match her career-high total … Thrasher last shot a 599 mark during the team’s NCAA record-setting victory over Akron on Jan. 17 … sophomore Elizabeth Gratz and junior Jean-Pierre Lucas shot 594 air rifle and tied for second place, while senior Meelis Kiisk and Spurgeon tied for fourth with 593 marks … Gratz and Lucas were one shot shy of their career-high 595 totals … senior Michael Bamsey shot 591 and tied for seventh place with Kentucky’s Hanna Carr … Bamsey also was one shot shy of his season-high 592 mark … in smallbore, Kiisk shot 585 (197 kneeling, 198, prone, 190 standing) and finished in second place … Thrasher tied for third with Kentucky’s Carr, shooting 583 (189 kneeling, 199 prone, 195 standing) … freshman Will Anti tied for fifth with senior Patrick Sunderman, as the Mountaineer shooters shot 583 marks … Thrasher finished with a match-best 1182 aggregate total, followed by Spurgeon with 1180 total … With the win, WVU improved to 17-9 all-time against Kentucky.
This Week in Wrestling: WVU will embark on a two-match Big 12 road trip … the Mountaineers first travel to new Big 12 affiliate South Dakota State … they will face the Jackrabbits on Friday evening in an 8 p.m. match at Frost Arena in Brookings… WVU then heads to Ames, Iowa, for a dual at No. 16 Iowa State on Sunday … the two teams will square off at 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia claimed its second straight upset win over a ranked Pitt team, defeating the No. 17 Panthers 18-12 on Sunday … six Mountaineers earned wins in the match … No. 13/14 Zeke Moisey won a 3-2 decision at 125 pounds, while Zachary Moore earned a 6-1 win at 149 … No. 16/15 Dylan Cottrell claimed an 11-5 win against Ronnie Garbinsky … Bubba Scheffel won his second straight bout with a 6-2 decision at 184 and No. 9/10 Jacob A. Smith took a 2-0 win at 197 … Tony DeAngelo had the most exciting win of the day with a 10-7 comeback victory at 141.
Notes: The match on Sunday marked the Mountaineer’s seventh dual against a ranked opponent … WVU have previously taken on then-No. 3 Michigan, then-No. 20 Oregon State, then-No. 5 Oklahoma State, then-No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Virginia Tech and No. 3 NC State … the Mountaineers, who were ranked as high as 19th at the beginning of the season, have faced five of the top-10 teams in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll … though unranked at the time of the meeting, Stanford has also recently entered the rankings at No. 22 … WVU is also slated to take on No. 16 Iowa State next weekend.
Coach Sammie Henson on Sunday’s victory over Pitt: “I think (Tony’s win) epitomizes our team. His whole month has kind of been like our team. We’ve faced some of the top guys in the country. I think that set the stage for today. (It was) perseverance and just staying focused, and not giving up. He was down by four or five and just kept battling. That’s the sign of a team. That’s the sign of an individual who wants to do it for himself and the team, and I think that’s a sign of our family.”

Notes: The rowing novice team swept Duquesne, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon to conclude the fall season on Saturday, Nov. 7, on the Allegheny River … the novice 8 ‘A’ boat raced to a first-place finish with a time of 11:11.86, five seconds ahead of Pitt … the Novice 8 ‘B’ boat also won, finishing in front of Pitt with a time of 10:37.8 on a course approximately 200 meters shorter than the first novice 8 competition … in the last two races of the day, West Virginia finished first with a time of 11:40.8 in the Novice 4 ‘A’ race, followed by another first-place finish in the Novice 4 ‘B’ race … the Head of the Occoquan was the first regatta of the season for the novice team on Saturday, Oct. 31 … eight of the Mountaineers’ 10 boats posted top-10 finishes on the Occoquan Reservoir … WVU’s four medals came with first-and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+, a bronze-medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 and a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Championship 4+ … the WVU rowing team also had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 3 … the Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8 … to open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8, as it faced 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers resume the season on Feb. 15 in Richmond, Texas … WVU will compete against Houston and host Rice in the one-day tournament.
Last Week in Golf: WVU has been off since competing in the Quail Valley Intercollegiate Oct. 26-27.
Coach Sean Covich: “We’re looking forward to a great schedule in the spring. The competition will only get more difficult as we head to No. 3 Florida State, Mississippi State, Ohio State, No. 20 Penn State, No. 18 Vanderbilt, plus Big 12s to face teams like No. 8 Texas, No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 17 Oklahoma State. This spring will certainly be a challenge for our guys, but when you are member of the Big 12 you can’t run and hide, so we are looking forward to the competition this spring.”
