MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team travels to Akron, Ohio, on Sunday, Feb. 7, for a match against the Zips. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m., at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
"We see Akron fairly often," said coach Miha Lisac. "We usually play them almost every fall in tournaments, so I don’t think either team is unfamiliar with the other. We know what to expect from them, and they know what to expect from us."
West Virginia (2-1) notched its first two victories of the spring season last weekend, as the team bested Toledo, 6-1, and Cleveland State, 6-1, in its home opener on Jan. 29, at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
Sophomore Habiba Shaker holds a team-best 3-0 mark at the No. 2 singles slot, while senior Hailey Barrett and Shaker are a team-best 3-0 in doubles action, at court No. 1.
WVU most recently competed against UA at the 2015 Akron Invitational from Oct. 2-4. The tournament was round-robin style, as West Virginia faced Akron in singles and doubles action. WVU collected four of the six singles victories and two of three doubles wins against the Zips throughout the three-day event.
"They have a lineup of players who can play well on any particular day, and we need to be mentally and physically ready to go," Lisac said. "They usually play aggressively, and we need to respond to that as well. This match will be determined by whoever is able to handle themselves better on that day."
In the last dual-match competition between the two teams, Akron posted a 4-3 victory over West Virginia in its 2014 season opener (Jan. 17).
The Mountaineers hold an 8-4 all-time series advantage in dual match competition against the Zips.
Most recently, the Zips (4-0) opened their season with three home victories. Akron claimed a 6-1 decision over Niagara before sweeping IUPUI, 7-0, on Jan. 29. Akron then closed the weekend with a 5-2 triumph against Youngstown State on Jan. 30.
Before Akron’s match against West Virginia, the Zips traveled to Wright State on Friday night (Feb. 5) to take on the Raiders in a in-state matchup. Akron posted another 6-1 victory to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Following Sunday’s match, the Mountaineers will compete in back-to-back road contests. West Virginia will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, as the team squares off against Liberty (Feb. 12), followed by a match against No. 48 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia (Feb. 14).
