WVU Edges Cornell in a Hard-Fought Battle

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle to tie the all-time series record at two apiece, today, in Ithaca, New York, inside the Reis Tennis Center.
West Virginia (6-3) defeated Cornell (5-5) for the first time since 1995 to improve its overall record to 6-3 this season, as the Mountaineers captured the doubles point and three singles victories over the Big Red to claim the match.
“It was a good team win today,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We handled the crowd and the match well enough to come away with a win. It was very important for us to take the doubles point going into singles. Cornell fought through the end, and they made it a battle. They brought a crowd today, and it definitely wasn’t easy to play against. However, we handled the situation well enough to beat a good team in a hostile environment.”
WVU clinched the doubles point early on, as the doubles tandems of senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Habiba Shaker and sophomore Carolina Lewis and Paula Goetz cruised past their opponents by a score of 6-2 on court one and court two, respectively. With the victory, Barrett and Shaker hold a team-best 8-1 mark at the No. 1 position this season.
In singles action, West Virginia and Cornell split its matches at three apiece. Barrett, Shaker and Choo collected victories on court one, two and five, respectively, to claim the match.
Barrett bested Cornell’s Marika Cusick in a three-set battle. She captured the first set, but dropped the second. Barrett then prevailed in the final set to tally her fourth victory of the season at the No. 1 position (6-1, 5-7, 6-4).
Shaker won her team-best eighth singles match of the year for the Mountaineers on court two, as she defeated Cornell’s Alexandra D’Ascenzo in a three-set match. She fell in the first set, but prevailed in the final two to claim the victory by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Choo also rolled to a straight set win at the No. 5 slot, as she defeated Cornell’s Priyanka Shah by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
West Virginia will hit the road once again, as the team travels to College Park, Maryland, for a nonconference match against the Terrapins on Saturday, March 5. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
