Guerrini Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following his six-hit weekend to open the season, junior catcher Ray Guerrini has been named the West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Guerrini had six hits to lead the Mountaineers to a series win at Charleston Southern. He notched the game-winning RBI in Saturday’s 5-0 victory and scored the winning run Sunday.
Along with his six hits, Guerrini hit .545 with a .818 slugging percentage, scored four runs and had nine total bases, all team highs.
Additionally, he had a double, a triple and knocked in two RBIs. Behind the plate, Guerrini caught all three games as WVU pitchers posted back-to-back shutouts and allowed just two earned runs all weekend. All three starters went at least five innings without giving up an earned run.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia returns to the road for an 11-day roadtrip before the home opener on March 11 ... WVU first plays three games at UNLV on Feb. 26-28, before traveling to Scottsdale, Arizona, for an exhibition contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Feb. 29 … the Mountaineers will then go to Hawaii for a four game series against the Rainbow Warriors, on March 3-6.
Last Week in Baseball: WVU opened the 2016 season with a series win at Charleston Southern … the Mountaineers opened the year with a 4-3 loss on Friday before recording a pair of shutout victories ... West Virginia won Saturday’s contest, 5-0, and Sunday’s series finale, 3-0 … in Saturday’s win, senior lefty Ross Vance earned the victory and junior catcher Ray Guerrini knocked in the winning run with a bases-loaded, two-RBI double in a four-run fourth inning … Sunday, sophomore right-hander BJ Myers pitched eight shutout innings, and it was Guerrini who scored the winning run on a single by freshman leftfielder Kyle Gray, his first career hit and RBI.
Notes: In the three-game series, the WVU pitching staff pitched two shutouts, held CSU scoreless in the final 19 innings and allowed just two earned runs all weekend … All three starters, junior Chad Donato, senior Ross Vance and sophomore BJ Myers pitched at least five innings and did not allow an earned run … senior Blake Smith earned his first save of the season on Sunday … freshmen Cole Austin, Jimmy Galusky, Kyle Gray and Darius Hill all recorded their first career hits … Galusky and Gray also posted their first RBIs as Mountaineers … junior first baseman Jackson Cramer reached base in all three games and has reached base in a team-best and career-high 23 consecutive games … sophomore third baseman Kyle Davis has reached base in 21 consecutive games.
Coach Randy Mazey after Saturday’s 5-0 win: “That was as good of a team victory we’ve had since I’ve been here. We played great defense, we pitched really well and had some really timely hitting. Some of the older guys in the lineup sacrificed some personal goals to try and help the team win, which was encouraging. Ray Guerrini’s double was the play of the game, it set the tone for the rest of the game. He’s seeing the ball really well now. Beyond what he’s seeing at the plate, he’s shown great leadership, he’s catching really well and keeping the team together. I couldn’t be happier for him.”
This Week in Gymnastics: The No. 23-ranked Mountaineers travel to Philadelphia for the Unite for Her Pink Invitational on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m., at the Pennsylvania Convention Center … WVU will face Penn State, Temple, West Chester and Southern Connecticut.
Last Week in Gymnastics: WVU fell short of defeating No. 22 Kentucky at the fourth-annual Wendy M. Roach Pink Meet Invitational, losing 195.8-195.6 on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers (2-6, 0-3) did defeat the Wildcats on floor, winning the event, 49.2-48.875 … a WVU gymnast won three events, with junior Alexa Goldberg finishing first on bars (9.9), senior Melissa Idell tying for the top spot on beam (9.85) and freshman Kirah Koshinski scoring the floor victory (9.875) … sophomore Zaakira Muhammad finished second on vault with a team-best 9.875, while Goldberg scored 39.2 in the all-around and placed second ... WVU finished with team scores of 49.0 on vault, 48.825 on bars and 48.575 on beam.
Notes: The Mountaineers tallied several career and season highs, including, career highs from Idell on beam and Koshinski on floor … Goldberg’s winning bars score matched a season high … the teams competed in front of 1,351 fans Sunday afternoon … WVU has now scored 195.0 or better in six straight meets and is only the second squad in program history to tally 195.0+ in six of its first seven competitions … WVU had five scores of 9.8 or better on floor, including 9.85 and second-place finishes from Idell and Muhammad … the 9.85 matched a season best for Idell … Goldberg’s all-around score of 39.2 is the second-highest mark of her career … WVU continues to lead the all-time series with UK, 15-8.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia concludes its regular season home schedule with a pair of games this week … on Wednesday, Feb. 24, WVU hosts TCU in a 7 p.m. tilt at the WVU Coliseum … admission is $1 courtesy of United Bank … senior Day is set for Saturday, Feb. 27, when the Mountaineers welcome No. 17 Oklahoma State to the Coliseum … Saturday’s game against the Cowgirls is also Family Day … Mountaineer fans can purchase a package which includes four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas and a box of popcorn for $25 … prior to the game, WVU will honor its three seniors: Bria Holmes, Jessica Morton and Arielle Roberson … both home games this week are televised regionally on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia (20-8, 9-6 Big 12) went 1-1 last week … the Mountaineers toppled No. 20/21 Oklahoma with a 63-55 win over the Sooners on Wednesday … Bria Holmes tallied 14 points, followed by Tynice Martin’s 12 … Arielle Roberson grabbed 14 rebounds and posted nine points in the victory … West Virginia fell 73-50 at No. 8/7 Texas on Sunday … Martin led WVU with 12 points followed by Chania Ray’s 10 … Roberson once again reached double-figure rebounds with her 12 boards.

Coach Mike Carey after Sunday’s loss at Texas: “Texas played well and we didn’t. We didn’t defend the on-ball pick. We let them in the lane, and we weren’t rotating. When we did rotate, they would hit wide open shots. They played harder.”
This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia will travel to Ithaca, New York, on Saturday, Feb. 27, for a 10 a.m. match against Cornell … WVU and Cornell will meet for the fifth time in program history, as the Big Red holds a 3-1 all-time series advantage.
Last Week in Women’s Tennis: The Mountaineers (5-3) notched two victories this weekend to improve their overall record to 5-3 … West Virginia edged Buffalo by a score of 4-3, on Feb. 19, inside Ridgeview Racquet Club … WVU then traveled to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, for a neutral site match at the Greenbrier Resort, as it cruised past James Madison, 6-1, on Feb. 21.
Notes: Sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team in singles play with an overall record of 7-1 … sophomore Carolina Lewis and freshman Paula Goetz have five wins each, followed by senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo with three victories apiece … the doubles tandem of Barrett and Shaker holds a team-best 7-1 mark at the No. 1 slot this season … the Mountaineers handed the Bulls their first loss of the season on Feb. 19, as they tied the all-time series record at two apiece … with the win over James Madison on Feb. 21, the Mountaineers improved to 10-20 all-time against the Dukes.
This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers will travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete for a Big 12 title at the 2016 Big 12 Indoor Championship on Feb. 26-27 … Iowa State will host the championship inside the Lied Recreation Center … last year, West Virginia finished ninth in the conference, while 10 Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 honors.
Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia concluded its regular season at the Penn State Tune-Up on Feb. 20 … WVU notched a victory and posted four top-two finishes at the meet … sophomore Maggie Drazba claimed the victory for the Mountaineers in the 3,000-meter run with a career-best time of 9:38.41 … senior Kelly Williams also competed in the 3,000-meter event and placed third with a time of 10:14.28 … junior Amy Cashin finished second in the mile in 4:39.85 … Cashin recorded a career-best time in the mile and improved from her previous mile time by 7.51 seconds … sophomore Madelin Gardner placed second with a vault of 3.90 meters … senior Tori Bertrand came in third, marking 3.75 meters, followed by sophomore Sara Finfrock in fourth (3.60 meters) and sophomore Rebekah Lafata in fifth (3.45 meters) … Finfrock and Lafata posted career-best marks on the day … West Virginia notched a top-two finish in the 60-meter hurdles, thanks to sophomore Meghan Jean-Baptiste. Baptiste finished second in 8.88, matching her season-best time at Akron on Feb. 6 … in the 600-meter run, junior Brianna Kerekes led the way for the Mountaineers, finishing in second place with a time of 1:33.69 … sophomore Rebecca Wendt placed fourth in the event in 1:35.5, a career-best time by 3.5 seconds.
Notes: The 2016 outdoor track and field schedule was announced on Feb. 16 ... the outdoor schedule consists of eight regular season meets, along with the Big 12, NCAA Regional and NCAA Championship meets.
Coach Sean Cleary after the Penn State Tune-Up: “This meet served us well. Each event group had some very positive moments. Amy (Cashin) joined a very exclusive club, running under 4:40 today. I was especially pleased with her race after being slightly off the last few weeks. Our vaulters were clearing bars, and they look good for conference.”
This Week in Swimming and Diving: After a month off from competition, West Virginia travels to Austin, Texas, to compete for a Big 12 title at the 2016 Big 12 Championship on Feb. 24-27 … last year the Mountaineer men placed third in the conference, while the women placed fourth.

Notes: WVU set four school records at last year’s Big 12 championship in the 400 free relay, women’s 3-meter, women’s 100 breaststroke and men’s 200 individual medley ... Nate Carr raced to a third-place finish in the A Final of the men’s 200 IM in a school record time of 1:44.70 ... Carr, a sophomore at the time, broke the previous WVU record of 1:46.04 set by Michael Walker in 2009 ... for his efforts, Carr claimed First Team All-Big 12 accolades ... Jenelle Zee raced to First-Team All-Big 12 accolades in the women’s 100 breaststroke A Final in a school-record 1:01.28, finishing third overall ... Zee broke her own school record set in 2013 (1:01.76) ... diver Lindsay Schmidt set a school record on the women’s 3-meter, placing third with a mark of 322.60 to earn First Team All-Big 12 honors ... she broke former Mountaineer Haily VandePoel’s mark of 316.20 set in the event in 2013 ... the final day of the championship was highlighted by the men’s 400 freestyle relay with Andrew Marsh, Nate Carr, Ross Glegg and Tim Squires ... the team earned All-Big 12 First Team recognition with a second-place finish in 2:54.04 ... the time of 2:54.04 broke the previous school record of 2:55.10 set in 2014.
This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers will open postseason competition at the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships, from Feb. 27-28, in Oxford, Mississippi … WVU holds a conference-best nine regular-season titles and has won the past six consecutive championships.
Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia shot a 4723 NCAA qualifying score on Saturday, Feb. 20 … WVU shot a 2349 mark in smallbore and 2374 in air rifle.
Notes: Freshman Ginny Thrasher led the team in air rifle, shooting 596 (98, 100, 100, 99, 99, 100) for the second straight week … senior Garrett Spurgeon shot 595 (100, 100, 97, 99, 99, 100) to place second, while seniors Michael Bamsey, Meelis Kiisk and Patrick Sunderman and freshman Will Anti all shot a 593 and tied for third place … sophomore Elizabeth Gratz shot a 590 (99, 100, 97, 99, 98, 97) air rifle mark, followed by junior Jean-Pierre Lucas with a 588 (99, 97, 99, 98, 98, 97) … Anti’s score was a career high, while Bamsey’s total was a season best … Thrasher also paced WVU in smallbore with a career-high 590 (194 kneeling, 199 prone, 197 standing) … Spurgeon and Bamsey tied for second place with 589s, a career high for Bamsey … Kiisk placed fourth with a 586 (193 kneeling, 200 prone, 193 standing), while Lucas shot 585 (192 kneeling, 200 prone, 193 standing) to place fifth … Gratz (583), Sunderman (581) and Anti (578) placed sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively … of note, three Mountaineers Bamsey, Kiisk and Lucas, shot a program-record 200 prone ... Thrasher and Bamsey also shot a career-best aggregate score of 1186 and 1182, respectively … five Mountaineers shot toward the team score in both disciplines: Bamsey, Kiisk, Lucas, Spurgeon and Sunderman … Saturday’s match also was Senior Day, and WVU’s four seniors – Bamsey, Kiisk, Spurgeon and Sunderman – shot their final match at home this season.

Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia (8-10, 0-4) went 2-0 with wins over Clarion and Edinboro in the final week of the regular season … a trio of West Virginia natives led the Mountaineers to a 30-6 win over Clarion on Friday at the WVU Coliseum … No. 17 Dylan Cottrell (Spencer) had a pin at 157 while Ryan Elliott (Fairmont) stepped into the lineup at 125 and won a 10-4 decision in his first career dual start … No. 9/10 Jacob A. Smith also rolled to a win at 197 … WVU defeated Edinboro, 18-14, for the first time since 2012 on Sunday … Cottrell upset No. 15/16 Austin Matthews in a 4-1 decision, while A.J. Vizcarrondo took a 1-0 win at heavyweight to win the match for the Mountaineers.
Notes: WVU honored four seniors on Friday against Clarion … Bubba Scheffel, Chris Nelson, A.J. Smith leads the team with a 28-7 mark overall and is 13-2 in duals … Smith enters the Big 12 Championships undefeated in league action at 7-0.

This Week in Golf: WVU is off until March 11, when the Mountaineers travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Seminole Intercollegiate … the event will be hosted by Florida State March 11-13.
Last Week in Golf: The Mountaineers returned to the links to start their spring season at the President’s Day Challenge at Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas on Monday, Feb. 15 … Alan Cooke tied for 13th with a score of 77-77-154 at 10 over par to lead the team … Chris Williams and Easton Renwick tied for 16th with scores of 155 for 11 over … playing as an individual, Tristan Nicholls posted the best WVU score of the day at 73-75=148 for four over … he finished tied for ninth… the Mountaineers took third with a team score of 312-314=625 at the tournament.

He’s been battling some illness this trip, and I was proud to see him compete like that. Overall, we didn’t do as well as we would have liked, but considering this trip was all about getting some practice time for everyone and sorting out the lineup for our first full-field event at Florida State, I think we accomplished a lot.”
