MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team defeated Buffalo by a score of 4-3 today, at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (4-3) handed the Bulls (4-1) their first loss of the season. With today’s win over Buffalo, WVU tied the all-time series record at two apiece.
The Mountaineers overcame a slow start against the Bulls, as sophomore Carolina Lewis and freshman Paula Goetz fell to Buffalo’s Tanja Stojanovska/Chantal Martinez Blanco, 6-2, on court two. Down 1-0 in doubles scoring, West Virginia picked up the pace at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, as the team won back-to-back matches to claim the one-point advantage.
At court one, senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Habiba Shaker won their sixth doubles match of the season as they bested Buffalo’s Dayana Agasieva and Margarita Kotok by a score of 7-5. On court three, junior Kaja Mrgole and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo claimed a 6-3 victory over Buffalo’s Laura Holterbosch and Christine Haraldson.
”Winning the doubles point was very important,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We always talk about the doubles point. It helps carry that momentum into singles play, and it was extremely important with a 4-3 match like today. There were things that we handled well at the end, and it felt good to come away with that doubles point.”
Leading the Bulls 1-0, the Mountaineers wasted little time as they recorded three of six singles victories to claim the match. Goetz picked up a win at the No. 3 position and cruised past Buffalo’s Kotok in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), followed by Lewis’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Buffalo’s Holterbosch on court four.
With the Mountaineers up 3-0, Barrett fell in a hard-fought battle at the No. 1 slot against Buffalo’s Stojanovska (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) to give the Bulls their first point of the day.
Only needing one point to win the match, Shaker answered the call for the Mountaineers on court two. She prevailed in a three-set battle, as she defeated Buffalo’s Blanco to win the Mountaineers fourth match of the day by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
“There are some positive things that we can take away from today’s match,” Lisac said. “There were some things that we improved on, and we can take that momentum with us into Sunday’s match. There also are some things that need to take another step forward as far as executing and dealing with different types of situations.”
The Mountaineers will travel to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, for a neutral site match against James Madison on Sunday, Feb. 21. The match against the Dukes is set to begin at 10 a.m. inside the Greenbrier Resort. Admission is free, and the team will host a meet-and-greet and autograph session for the fans immediately following the match.
