MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at No. 47 Virginia Tech, today, inside the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
“I thought we had some good battles today,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Overall, we learned a lot from this road trip. It was great to play against a team like Virginia Tech because a lot of different situations occurred, and now we are able to learn from those types of situations. We were not satisfied with how the road trip ended, but it is still very early on in the season. We are going to continue to work hard and implement our learning experiences into next weekend’s matches.”
The Mountaineers (3-3) found themselves in a hole early after surrendering the doubles point to the Hokies (5-1). Senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Habiba Shaker suffered their first doubles loss of the season, as they stumbled against VT’s Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford, 6-4, on court one. Sophomore Carolina Lewis and Paula Goetz closed out the doubles session, as they lost to VT’s Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita at the No. 2 slot (6-3).
The Hokies swept the Mountaineers in two straight sets at every position, with the exception of court six. Sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo battled VT’s Katherine Butler in three sets, but fell by a score of 5-7, 6-3, 10-6.
On court one, Shaker lost her first singles match of the season to VT’s No. 41 Francesca Fusinato (6-0, 6-4). Forcing a 7-6 second set, Barrett fell to VT’s No. 108 Elena Cerezo-Codina at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-1, 7-6.
Goetz also stumbled against Virginia Tech’s No. 113 Caroline Daxhelet at the No. 3 position by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
“We have to get better at preparing our mental game,” Lisac explained. “We have to take advantage of the opportunities given to us. We have to understand our game, and we have to be ready to seize the moment when it comes. I thought we prepared well, and we put ourselves in position to be successful in certain matches, but we did not rise to the occasion.”
The Mountaineers will return home for a nonconference match against Buffalo on Friday, Feb. 19. Competition is set to begin at noon, inside Ridgeview Racquet Club.
