Montgomery Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After a stellar performance from West Virginia University women’s basketball player Lanay Montgomery last week, the senior center has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Montgomery paced the Mountaineers with a double-double average of 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in West Virginia’s wins over Morehead State and Mississippi last week. The senior blocked eight total shots for 4.0 blocks per game and made 13-of-14 from the field to finish shooting 92.9 percent from the field. Montgomery registered a historic performance with 23 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks in West Virginia’s 94-53 win against Morehead State.
The Pittsburgh native was just the second Mountaineer to score at least 20 points, grab at least 18 rebounds and block at least five shots in a game. She joined WVU Hall of Famer Georgeann Wells (1984) as the only two players to accomplish that feat in program history. Additionally, Montgomery made 10-of-11 from the field for 90.9 percent shooting against the Eagles. In just 14 minutes of action against Ole Miss, Montgomery managed to score eight points, grab five rebounds and block two shots.
She went 3-of-3 from the field and made a critical layup in the third quarter to extend WVU’s lead over the Rebels. This season, Montgomery is averaging 10.9 points and 10.0 rebounds, while shooting at a 68.4 percent (39-of-57) from the field.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The Mountaineers, the 2016 Big 12 Conference regular-season and championship victors, have concluded their 2016 season with a 23-2-2 record and a 8-0 mark in Big 12 paly.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: No. 1-ranked WVU advanced to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in program history and lost, 3-1, to No. 7 USC on Sunday, Dec. 3, at Avaya Stadium, in San Jose, California … after falling behind 1-0 two minutes into the match, senior midfielder Ashley Lawrence knotted the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute before Katie Johnson tallied two scores to steal the win … WVU outshot USC, 21-8, and forced the Trojans into eight saves … freshman Rylee Foster made two saves for WVU … the Mountaineers advanced to the final via a 1-0 win over No. 6-ranked North Carolina on Dec. 2 … junior forward Michaela Abam tallied the game-winner in the 74th minute … the Mountaineers outshot the Tar Heels, 13-5, and forced UNC into five saves … the shutout was WVU’s 18th of the year, and the Mountaineers denied UNC a shot on-goal.
Notes: Prior to the weekend games, seniors Michaela Abam and Lawrence were named semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy … they also were named NSCAA All-America First Team honorees, while Abam landed on the second team … additionally, Buchanan was named the espnW National Player of the Year … WVU’s 23 wins also are a program record Abam finished with a team-best 12 goals and 33 points (12 G, 9 A) … Sunday was the final career match for Buchanan, Lawrence and seniors Carly Black and Ashley Woolpert.
This Week in Women’s Basketball: The No. 13/17-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team takes a five-day break before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 10, against USC Upstate in a 6:30 p.m. tilt at the WVU Coliseum … all kids 13 and under that complete the Musket coloring sheet will receive free admission to Saturday’s contest.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia improved to 9-0 with a 94-53 win over Morehead State on Wednesday, Nov. 30, and a 66-61 victory over Ole Miss in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Sunday afternoon … Lanay Montgomery led the Mountaineers with 23 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks against Morehead State … Teana Muldrow also registered a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds … the Mountaineers outlasted Ole Miss in a defensive battle to pick up the Big 12’s fourth victory in the Challenge … WVU utilized a season-high 34 points off the bench … Kristina King led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds followed by 12 points from Alexis Brewer and 10 from Tynice Martin.
Notes: Montgomery’s 23/18/6 performance against Morehead State marks the second time a Mountaineer has scored at least 20 points, grabbed at least 18 rebounds and blocked five or more shots in a game … Montgomery joins WVU Hall of Famer Georgeann Wells (1984) as the only two Mountaineers to accomplish that feat … WVU (9-0) has now won 30 straight games against nonconference opponents in the WVU Coliseum … the win against Ole Miss also marks the 11th straight game the Mountaineers have won at home … the Mountaineers are off to their best start since opening the 2010-11 season at 16-0 … with a 10 point performance against Ole Miss, Tynice Martin has scored in double-figures in every game of 2016 and in 17 of the last 19 games … three or more Mountaineers have reached double-figures in six games this season … after holding Mississippi to a 32.2 field goal percentage, WVU has held all of its opponents this season to shoot less than 40 percent from the field and 10 straight since holding Ohio State to less than 40 percent last season … WVU’s 43 field goal attempts against the Rebels were the lowest since shooting 43 at Georgetown on Jan. 25, 2011.
Coach Mike Carey after Sunday’s win over Ole Miss: “Let me just start out by saying, I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty. So you know that was an ugly game with all of the turnovers and missed foul shots. But, I give credit to the bench. Kristina King came in and did some good things. I thought Desiree Rhodes came in and gave us some quality minutes, so give credit to especially those two. Also, I thought Alexis Brewer came in and did some good things. It was good to see the bench contribute.”

Last Week in Track and Field: The West Virginia University track and field team won three events at the Marty Pushkin Classic to open the 2016-17 indoor season at the WVU Shell Building on Saturday ... Coach Sean Cleary after the Marty Pushkin Classic: “This turned out to be a nice day for the team. I was pleased that we were able to give the team a chance to get out onto the track and get the season started. We have five weeks before we’re back into competition and so much to do between now and that point. The girls will hit the books and nail their exams and go home for Christmas, before returning to campus when they put the uniform on again. We must take the momentum that we saw today and raise our game. I am pleased with the way we looked in both the high jump and pole vault. Our runners looked like the fall has gone well, but in all three areas we need to attack December and be ready for January. We have a chance to better ourselves and really attack the winter.”
This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers travel to Pittsburgh to face No. 21 Pitt on Sunday … this season’s edition of the Backyard Brawl will take place at Fitzgerald Field House and is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
Last Week in Wrestling: The West Virginia University wrestling team (0-3, 0-0) traveled to the 2016 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday … the Mountaineers finished 28th at the event … Jacob A. Smith earned a podium finish by taking fourth at 197 pounds … Smith went 4-2 at the tournament, registering wins over Jake Waste of Cal Baptist (Dec., 5-0), Central Michigan’s Austin Severn (Dec., 6-1), No. 16 Tom Sleigh of Bucknell (Dec., 6-1) and No. 15 Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin (Dec., 8-1) … Cory Stainbrook recorded a 3-2 mark at the tournament, with wins over Bucknell’s Zach Firestone (Dec. 6-2), Columbia’s Alec Kelly (Dec., 11-5) and Edinboro’s Korbin Myers (Dec., 6-3).

Jake had some good success but isn’t where he wants to be. We believe that with commitment he will reach his goal of becoming an All-American.”
This Week in Rifle: The No. 3 Mountaineers do not compete again until hosting No. 10 Alaska-Fairbanks on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the WVU Rifle Range.
Last Week in Rifle: Several Mountaineers shot at the USA Shooting Winter Air Gun Championships, held Dec. 2-4, at the US Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado … junior Elizabeth Gratz made the junior and open final in the women’s 10m air rifle on Sunday … she finished fifth in the open competition with a 185 mark and fourth in the junior final with a 204.1 score … she qualified with a 414.5 relay score … she also finished second in the junior division on Friday with a 249.0 final score … freshman Milica Babic shot the second-best score of the day Sunday with a 417.7 mark … a native of Belgrade, Serbia, she was not eligible to shoot in the final … sophomore Will Anti finished eighth in the junior division on day one with a 119.2 final score … he qualified with a 615.6 mark.
