Buchanan Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After anchoring a Mountaineer defense which turned away 17 shots, including 11 second-half looks, from No. 5-ranked Duke in a 1-0 victory on Nov. 26, senior defender Kadeisha Buchanan of the top-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
With the win, the Mountaineers (22-1-2, 8-0) advance to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in the program’s 21-year history.
WVU held on to a 1-0 advantage for 74 minutes and withstood an offensive attack from the Blue Devils, who finished with a 17-12 edge in shots and 10-6 edge in corner kicks. The shutout is the Mountaineers’ 17th of the season, a program record, and third in four games. WVU has allowed just nine opponent goals all year.
Buchanan also assisted on the game-winning goal, her third helper of the season.
WVU will face No. 6-ranked and second-seeded North Carolina in the first of two semifinal matches on Friday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. ET, at Avaya Stadium, in San Jose, California. The match will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Mountaineers (22-1-2, 8-0) will make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA College Cup when they face No. 6-ranked and second-seeded North Carolina on Friday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. ET, at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California … the winner will advance to the Championship and play the winner of No. 2-seeds Georgetown vs. USC on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. ET … all College Cup matches will be televised by ESPNU.
Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU defeated No. 5-ranked and third-seeded Duke 1-0 on Nov. 26, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … junior midfielder Alli Magaletta tallied the game-winner in the 16th minute, her third score and third game-winner of the season … junior Michaela Abam and senior Kadeisha Buchanan earned the assists … freshman Rylee Foster returned from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup last week to make five saves for her seventh, and the team’s 17th, shutout of the season … Duke finished with a 17-12 edge in shots … EJ Proctor stopped four Mountaineer attempts … the Blue Devils also earned a 10-6 edge in corner kicks.
Notes: The Mountaineers advance to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in three tries … WVU is the first Big 12 Conference team to advance to the semifinals … WVU is unbeaten in its last 16 matches … the Mountaineers improved to 18-5-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 13-6-3 in tournament matches played in Morgantown … with the assist, her ninth of the season, Abam pushed her team-best season point total to 31 (11 G, 9 A) … the win was WVU’s second of the season against Duke and the Mountaineers now show a 2-1-1 all-time series edge … WVU and UNC have met only once before, a 4-2 Tar Heel victory on Sept. 8, 2013, in Durham, North Carolina … prior to Saturday’s win, senior Carly Black and sophomore Bianca St. Georges were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second and Third teams, respectively … additionally, the Mountaineer coaching staff was named the NSCAA Central Regional Staff of the Year.
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers’ 2016 season has concluded.
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers (12-18, 3-13) wrapped up the season with a road trip to Texas … WVU fell to TCU in five sets, 3-2, on Wednesday in Fort Worth … freshmen Payton Caffrey and Natania Levak led the way with 15 kills each … Morgan Montgomery had 14 while Erin Slinde had 45 assists … West Virginia fell to No. 5 Texas, 3-0, in the season finale at Texas on Saturday … Caffrey again led the squad with 12 kills … Gianna Gotterba had 10 digs and Slinde had 19 assists.
Notes: The Mountaineers end the season at 12-18 overall and 3-13 in league play… the squad won seven more matches than in 2015, when they posted just five wins … Payton Caffrey was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week five times … Mia Swanegan was twice named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week … Caffrey finished the season ranked second in the league in kills per set (4.44) and points per set (4.92) and was fourth in service aces (0.26) … Swanegan led the league in blocking with 1.34 blocks per set … Gianna Gotterba was fourth with 3.90 digs per set … Erin Slinde finished the year ninth with 5.94 assists per set.
This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia will have five weeks off before traveling to compete at Pitt on Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. ET.

This Week in Women’s Basketball: No. 16/23-ranked West Virginia returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in a 6:30 p.m. tilt against Morehead State ... all youth in eighth grade or lower, who wear a youth team jersey, will receive free admission ... the Mountaineers partake in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge for the first time on Sunday, Dec. 4, in a 4 p.m. matchup with Ole Miss ... all fans who donate a toy for the WVU Toy Mountain drive will receive free admission for the game or a future women’s basketball game ... the first 500 fans will receive a free ugly holiday sweater T-shirt ... additionally, members of the Mountaineer Kids Club will have the opportunity to shoot around on the court following the game.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia collected victories over North Carolina A&T (80-64), East Carolina (79-47) and Auburn (56-52) to win the Savannah Invitational championship last week in Savannah, Georgia. Tynice Martin was named the Savannah Invitational MVP after averaging 20.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game ... Teana Muldrow garnered All-Tournament accolades after tallying 14.7 points and 11.0 rebounds in the three contests … WVU capped the week with an 82-59 win over High Point on Sunday.
Notes: Tynice Martin registered a career-high 28 points in the Mountaineers’ win over North Carolina A&T … in the win over ECU, Teana Muldrow recorded her second career double-double with a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds … Martin led the Mountaineers with 16 points, while Lanay Montgomery followed with 13 in WVU’s victory over Auburn … Muldrow matched a career-high with 14 rebounds against the Tigers … Martin led the Mountaineers with 21 points in Sunday’s win over High Point … Montgomery (15 points/14 rebounds) and Muldrow (12 points and 10 rebounds) became the first Mountaineer duo since Montgomery and Holmes last season against Marshall to both record a double-double in a game … since the Ohio State game last March, West Virginia has held its last eight opponents below 40 percent shooting from the field … the Mountaineers’ field goal percentage defense of 28.8% led the nation as of Sunday … Mike Carey coached his 500th career game at West Virginia on Sunday against High Point … Carey, the program’s all-time wins leader, holds a 329-171 (.658) record in 16 seasons at the helm of the program.

This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers (0-3, 0-0) head to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas … the event will take place Dec. 2-3 … Dylan Cottrell took third at 157 and Jacob A. Smith placed fourth at 197 at last year’s tournament.

Smith (197) has moved up several spots in the national rankings as announced by several publications on Tuesday … ranked No. 9 by InterMat last week, Smith has moved up to No. 7 at 197 pounds … the redshirt junior moved up two spots in FloWrestling’s rankings as well, going from No. 10 to No. 8 … Smith jumped six spots in rankings released by The Open Mat, going from No. 16 to No. 10 … the Charleston, West Virginia, native defeated then-No. 6 Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska in a 2-0 decision last week … despite missing last week’s tilt with the Huskers, Dylan Cottrell moved up one spot to No. 7 in 165-pound rankings released by The Open Mat … the senior from Spencer, West Virginia, is ranked at No. 8 in the nation according to InterMat, while FloWrestling keeps him at No. 9 in its poll ... Smith was named the Big 12 Co-Wrestler of the Week for the third week of the season, announced by the league on Monday … it marks the third time in his career that Smith has earned a Big 12 weekly award … he shared the honor with Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State … ranked No. 9/10 at 197 pounds, Smith earned a 2-0 decision over No. 6 Aaron Studebaker in the Mountaineers’ dual at No. 7 Nebraska on Friday, Nov. 8 … the two previously met in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Championships, with Studebaker taking the win.
This Week in Rifle: Select student-athletes will compete at the 2016 USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships, Dec. 2-4, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
