This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia continues its two-game road swing with a game at Kansas State on Wednesday, Jan. 6 … tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas … the game will air on FOX College Sports Central and via the FOX Sports Go app … WVU returns home on Saturday, Jan. 9 in a 7 p.m. tilt with the Texas Tech Lady Raiders … a commemorative Mike Carey all-time wins leader poster will be given to fans in attendance, courtesy of United Bank.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia (12-3, 1-1 Big 12) went 2-1 last week … the Mountaineers defeated Elon 67-57 last Monday to finish non-conference play 11-2 … Lanay Montgomery scored a career-high 21 points, while Bria Holmes added 19 in the victory … WVU fell in its Big 12 opener with a 65-54 setback to No. 5/6-ranked Texas … Tynice Martin scored a team-high 15 points in the loss … Jessica Morton scored a season-high 18 points, as West Virginia knocked off Kansas 65-45 on Sunday for the team’s first Big 12 win of the season.
Notes: West Virginia is 12-0 this season when leading at the half … the Mountaineers snapped a six-game losing skid on the road with a victory at KU on Sunday … it was the first road win since toppling Oklahoma State, 61-49, on Jan. 17, 2015 … West Virginia finished 11-2 in non-conference play, including 6-0 at home … the perfect mark was the ninth time in 15 seasons that coach Mike Carey’s squads have finished unblemished at home against non-conference foes … Bria Holmes’ 13 points at Kansas tied her with Meg Bulger for No. 5 on WVU’s all-time scoring chart with 1,665 career points … Holmes leads the Mountaineers with 16.9 points per game … Lanay Montgomery leads WVU with 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game … Montgomery’s blocks mark leads the Big 12 and ranks 11th nationally … Montgomery is third on the program’s all-time blocks chart with 179 career deflections.
Quote from coach Mike Carey after Sunday’s win at Kansas: “In the first half, I thought we did what we needed to do defensively, but in the second half we stood around a little bit. Kansas is very young, and we are too. If you look at our roster, 11 out of 14 are new to our squad this year. I was impressed with Jessica (Morton) coming off the bench, and she did very well and so did Desiree Rhodes.”
This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers are off until Jan. 15 when they host No. 7 Oklahoma State in a Big 12 match at the WVU Coliseum … the match will start at 8 p.m.
Last Week in Wrestling: The No. 25 WVU wrestling team took seventh place at the 2016 Defense Soaps & Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tennessee … four Mountaineers earned spots on the podium … No. 11/12 Zeke Moisey came back from a first-round loss to win seven straight matches and take third place at 125 pounds … No. 8 Jacob A. Smith used a pair of pins to finish fourth at 197 pounds … Tony DeAngelo went 6-2 with a pair of tech. falls and a major decision at 141 pounds for seventh place … Ross Renzi finished with a 4-3 mark for eighth place at 174 pounds … WVU finished second among Big 12 teams at the event and finished ahead of five ranked programs in the 31-team field.

This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers open the 2016 season at No. 16 Denver, with No. 24 Southern Utah, on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. ET, inside Hamilton Gymnasium in Denver, Colorado.
Last Season in Gymnastics: WVU returns to competition following a 2015 campaign which saw the team finish a program-best second at the Big 12 Gymnastics Championship, as well as fifth at the NCAA Morgantown Regional Championships with a 195.65 score, the team’s second-best mark at a regional … the Mountaineers finished the year with a 14-9-1 mark and a 1-1-1 showing in the Big 12 Conference … the squad finished the 2015 regular season strong, posting a season-best 196.075 in wins over Penn and Cornell … additional season highlights included a first place, 195.35 score at NC State’s quad meet on Jan. 31, the team’s first win in Raleigh, North Carolina, since 2007 … additionally, Dayah Haley was named to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team and Jaida Lawrence was named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Notes: Under the guidance of fifth-year coach Jason Butts, the Mountaineers are led by seniors Jaida Lawrence, Melissa Idell and Audrey Tolbert … WVU is 4-4 all-time against the Pioneers, who will compete in the Big 12 Conference this season as an affiliate member … DU defeated WVU, 195.425-194.6, last season inside the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers own a 4-1 all-time record against SUU, with their last win a 192.125-191.05 victory at Utah in 2013 … juniors Nicolette Swoboda and Alexa Goldberg return as the team’s top point earners, as the duo finished with 368.725 and 321.7 points, respectively, in 2015 … Lawrence paced the team on vault last season with a 9.827 average … she shows a team-best 13 career victories, all on vault, and has scored below 9.825 on the event only 10 times in three seasons … Goldberg is the team’s top bars worker, as she averaged a team-best 9.825 last year … she also owns a team-best 13 career wins, with 12 coming on bars, and she posted a career-high 9.95 on the event last year … sophomore Jordan Gillette paced the team on beam as a freshman with a 9.763 season average … she scored 9.75 or better on the event in each of the final eight meets … Idell returns as the team’s top floor worker, as she finished second on the team in 2015 with a 9.84 season average … a two-time Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week last year, she scored 9.875 or better on the event five times.
This Week in Rifle: West Virginia is idle this week ... the No. 1-ranked Mountaineers resume competition with a match against nonconference opponent No. 5 Alaska-Fairbanks on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the WVU Rifle Range.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers are idle this week ... West Virginia opens the 2015-16 regular season when the team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete at the Nittany Lion Challenge on Jan. 16.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: The West Virginia University swimming and diving team returns to action when the men’s and women’s teams host Pitt on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 10 a.m. at the WVU Natatorium … the women have squared off against Pitt every season since 1987-88, while the men’s version of the Backyard Brawl has taken place every season since 1994-95.

This Week in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia resumes play on Jan. 23 for the dual meet portion of the season … the Mountaineers kick off the spring season when they travel to Pitt to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m.

Notes: This fall, the Mountaineers competed in five tournaments … sophomore Habiba Shaker leads the team with nine singles wins, followed by senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo with eight and seven victories this season, respectively … the doubles tandems of Barrett and sophomore Yvon Martinez, sophomore Carolina Lewis and Choo and junior Kaja Mrgole and Shaker are tied with a team-best 4-3 doubles record this fall.
Coach Miha Lisac on the conclusion of the fall season: “We are working on the right things going into the spring season. Each and every player has improved, and we also improved as a team. We are not far off, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, there is more work to be done, but we can see that we are capable of playing well and can capitalize on points when given the opportunity.”

Notes: The rowing novice team swept Duquesne, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon to conclude the fall season on Saturday, Nov. 7, on the Allegheny River … the novice 8 ‘A’ boat raced to a first-place finish with a time of 11:11.86, five seconds ahead of Pitt … the Novice 8 ‘B’ boat also won, finishing in front of Pitt with a time of 10:37.8 on a course approximately 200 meters shorter than the first novice 8 competition … in the last two races of the day, West Virginia finished first with a time of 11:40.8 in the Novice 4 ‘A’ race, followed by another first-place finish in the Novice 4 ‘B’ race … the Head of the Occoquan was the first regatta of the season for the novice team on Saturday, Oct. 31 … eight of the Mountaineers’ 10 boats posted top-10 finishes on the Occoquan Reservoir … WVU’s four medals came with first-and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+, a bronze-medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 and a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Championship 4+ … the WVU rowing team also had a strong showing in its fall season opener at the Head of the Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 3 … the Mountaineers placed first and third in the Women’s Open 4+ and second in the Women’s Open 8 … to open the day, West Virginia finished second in the Women’s Open 8, as it faced 12 boats to take a silver medal back home to Morgantown.
This Week in Golf: The Mountaineers will take a winter hiatus and return to the course on Feb. 15, when they travel to Houston, Texas, for the President’s Day Challenge … the event will be hosted by Rice.
