MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team notched its first two victories of the spring season, as the team bested Toledo, 6-1, and Cleveland State, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“Overall, I thought we did fairly well in singles,” said coach Miha Lisac. “We played consistent, and we responded to certain situations fairly well. Overall, I was pleased with how the girls reacted in today’s matches, and they all had great performances individually.”
The Mountaineers (2-1) started off strong against the Rockets (1-2), as the team won back-to-back matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. On court one, senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Habiba Shaker cruised past UT’s Emily Mazzola and Sidnay Huck by a score of 6-3. At the No. 2 position, sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez bested UT’s Colleen O’Brien and Megan Miller, 6-3, to claim the Mountaineers’ first match point of the day. With wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots, the Mountaineers seized an early one-point advantage over the Rockets.
Leading the Rockets 1-0, West Virginia wasted no time as it recorded three straight victories in straight sets to claim the match. Barrett picked up the pace at the No. 1 singles slot and cruised past UT’s Mazzola (6-1, 6-1), followed by freshman Paula Goetz’s 6-1, 6-1 victory over UT’s O’Brien on court three. With the win, Goetz tallied her first career singles victory in Mountaineer uniform.
Only needing one more point to win the match, Martinez answered the call for the Mountaineers at the No. 6 slot. Martinez made quick work of her opponent, as she defeated UT’s Lauren Thai in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
With the match decided, Choo (7-5, 6-0) and Shaker (6-2, 6-4) each picked up victories at the No. 5 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
During the afternoon session, West Virginia found itself in a hole early after surrendering the doubles point to Cleveland State (0-3). Choo and Martinez fell to CSU’s Victoria Bensimon and Morgan Nix, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. Barrett and Shaker tied the doubles point at one-all, as they defeated CSU’s Isabella Spindler and Aleksandra Golawska, 6-3, on court one. Junior Kaja Mrgole and Goetz suffered a 6-4 setback to CSU’s Princess Gbadamosi and Mathilde Orange in a hard-fought battle at the No. 3 slot to give the Vikings a one-point match advantage.
“Coming off the first match, the team did not respond very well,” Lisac explained. “We came out flat, and we weren’t prepared. However, the team bounced back in singles play, and I was pleased with how the girls responded after we lost the doubles point against Cleveland State. They raised the bar going into the singles matches.”
West Virginia bounced back in singles action as it recorded three consecutive victories in straight sets and one three-set tie breaker to capture its second victory of the day. Barrett rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over CSU’s Gbadamosi at the No. 1 slot. Lewis recorded her first victory of the day, as she bested CSU’s Spindler on court four, 6-0, 6-1.
Shaker put WVU up 3-1, as she cruised past CSU’s Orange at the No. 2 position with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
The match clinching point came at the No. 3 position, as Goetz made a comeback in a three-set battle and bested CSU’s Bensimon by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
With the match decided, Martinez (6-0, 6-3) and Choo (2-6, 6-4, 10-7) each picked up victories at the No. 6 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
Next up, the Mountaineers travel to Akron, Ohio, on Sunday, Feb. 7 for a match against the Zips. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
