Koshinski Collects Third Straight Big 12 Honor
January 26, 2016 05:03 PM | Gymnastics
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the third straight week, the Big 12 Conference has bestowed a weekly honor upon West Virginia University freshman gymnast Kirah Koshinski, as she was again named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
A native of Berwick, Pennsylvania, Koshinski is the first Big 12 gymnast to earn three straight newcomer honors since Oklahoma’s Brenna Dowell earned three consecutive awards in 2015. She is the first Mountaineer gymnast to score three straight Big 12 weekly recognitions and only the second in program history to earn three Big 12 awards in one season; Alaska Richardson was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week three times in 2013.
Koshinski continues to set the standard on vault this season for the No. 22-ranked Mountaineers (2-2, 0-1), as she earned her third straight event title and matched her career-high score with a 9.9 performance in WVU’s 195.8-190.075 win over William & Mary on Jan. 24, inside the WVU Coliseum. The rookie also set a career high on floor with a 9.875 mark, good enough for second place, and finished third on balance beam with a 9.75 point total. Koshinski’s floor score helped the Mountaineers tally a season-high 49.3 event total, the team’s best floor mark since 2013.
Just three weeks into her collegiate career, Koshinski owns three event wins and seven podium finishes. She currently ranks No. 9 nationally, No. 2 in the Big 12, on vault with a 9.892 season average. She also ranks No. 5 in the conference on beam (9.783 avg.) and No. 8 on floor (9.808 avg.).
WVU does not compete this week. The squad embarks on a two-meet Big 12 Conference road trip next weekend. The Mountaineers open the road swing at Iowa State on Friday, Feb. 5, at 7:30 p.m. ET, and then travel to No. 2 Oklahoma for a 2:45 p.m. ET meet on Sunday, Feb. 7.
