MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team kicks off the 2016 dual-match season when it travels to Pitt to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
“We are excited to start the spring season,” said Mountaineer coach Miha Lisac. “This is what we have been preparing for, and we are very excited to take the courts and start competing.”
In the fall, the Mountaineers competed in five tournaments. Sophomore Habiba Shaker led the team with nine singles wins, followed by senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo with eight and seven victories, respectively. The doubles tandems of sophomore Yvon Martinez and Barrett, junior Kaja Mrgole and Shaker and sophomore Carolina Lewis and Choo all posted 4-3 records. The team tallied a 67-64 combined record in the fall.
“We are working on the right things going into the spring season,” Lisac noted. “Each and every player has improved, and we are also improving as a team. We are not far off, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, there is more work to be done, but we can see that we are capable of playing well, and that we can capitalize on points when given the opportunity.”
Most recently, Pitt opened the 2016 season against Marshall, Miami (Ohio) and Akron in the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invitational. Seven singles players went undefeated at the three-day event. Junior Lolade Ogungbesan defeated Marshall’s No. 99-ranked Derya Turhan, and was crowned the winner of the singles tournament.
The Mountaineers clash with the Panthers for the 35th time in program history.
