MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out the WVU Pink Invitational with a 15-14 combined singles and doubles record. The Mountaineers wrapped up the three-day event on Sunday, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, with three victories in singles action.
Sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo recorded a perfect 3-0 record on the weekend to claim the Flight C singles bracket. On Friday, Choo bested Wright State’s Vanessa Madrigal in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). In the semifinal round, Choo defeated Maryland’s Olga Gaistruk by a score of 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the title match. Choo then battled Buffalo’s Laura Holterbosch, on Sunday morning. She claimed the first set, but fell in the second. She prevailed in set three, only giving up two games, to claim the match by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
In Flight A, senior Hailey Barrett advanced to the semifinal round, but fell to Tanja Stojanovska, on Saturday afternoon. Barrett then bested Maryland’s Cassandre Thebault in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) in a consolation match, on Sunday.
In Flight E, freshman Abigail Rosiello cruised past Wright State’s Aby Madrigal by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
"Overall, there was improvement from last weekend, but we have to continue to get better and improve,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We have to continue to be consistent in our play and in our approach in doubles. Overall, we took steps forward this weekend.
“Next weekend we travel to Akron for another good tournament,” Lisac noted. “We will be challenged with good teams, and we want to respond to those challenges in both singles and doubles play.”
The Mountaineers travel to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the Akron Invite from Oct. 2-4.
