WVU Sends Three Players to Singles Finals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team advanced three players to the final round in two of the four singles flights in day two of the WVU Pink Invitational, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, on Saturday.
“I think we showed some things today that were better than yesterday,” said third-year Miha Lisac. “We are looking to get better tomorrow.”
In Flight B singles action, sophomores Habiba Shaker and Carolina Lewis will face each other tomorrow in the finals. Shaker bested Buffalo’s Margarita Kotok in straight sets by a score of 7-5, 6-2. Lewis defeated UB’s Sanjana Sudhir in a hard-fought three-set battle to advance to the final round. Lewis claimed the first set, but fell in the second. She prevailed in set three to claim the match by a score of 6-1, 6-7, 6-1.
Lewis takes on Shaker in the final round of competition, on Sunday afternoon, at 12 p.m.
In Flight C, sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo also advanced to the finals, after besting Maryland’s Olga Gaistruk in the semifinal round by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Choo competes against UB’s Laura Holterbosch in the finals on Sunday afternoon, at 12 p.m.
Senior Hailey Barrett fell in the Flight A semifinal round to Buffalo’s Tanja Stojanovska in a three-set battle by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Barrett plays Maryland’s Cassandre Thebault in a consolation match tomorrow, at 12 p.m.
In doubles action, sophomore Yvon Martinez and Barrett fell to Toledo’s Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola in the finals by a score of 6-1. Lewis and Choo cruised past Wright State’s Linsey Verstrepen and Vanessa Madrigal (6-2) to claim the victory in Flight B’s consolation bracket.
The Mountaineers wrap up the WVU Pink Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 27. Weather permitting, all matches will be played at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. The final round of singles matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
