MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team advances five players to the semifinal round in three of the four singles flights in day one of the WVU Pink Invitational, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, on Friday.
“We were looking for a big improvement in doubles today, and I thought Hailey (Barrett) and Yvon (Martinez) responded well,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Tomorrow is another day where we look to get better.”
Eight different Mountaineers saw action in doubles and singles play. The three-day event consists of four full flights and one round-robin flight for singles action. It also features three full flights of doubles competition.
WVU won one of two matches in the Flight A singles bracket. Senior Hailey Barrett advanced to the semifinal round, as she bested WSU’s Karolina Haller in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Barrett takes on Buffalo’s Tanja Stojanovska in the semifinal round, at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday.
Also in Flight A, junior Kaja Mrgole fell to Maryland’s Cassandre Thebault in a three-set battle with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomores Habiba Shaker and Carolina Lewis bested their opponents in straight sets to claim a spot in the semifinal round in the Flight B singles bracket. Shaker defeated Toledo’s Mackenzie Bowman by a score of 6-3, 6-3, and Lewis topped UM’s Caroline Williams with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Shaker and Lewis, who will not face each other, open semifinal play at Noon, on Saturday.
Sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez also defeated their opponents in straight set fashion to advance to the semifinal round in the Flight C singles bracket. Choo bested Wright State’s Aby Madrigal by a score of 6-2, 6-4, as Martinez cruised past UT’s Claire Aleck (6-2, 6-2). Choo and Martinez’s semifinal matches are set to begin at Noon, on Saturday, as they look to advance to the finals to face each other.
West Virginia claimed two out of five doubles matches to finish the day. Barrett and Martinez topped UM’s Thebault and Williams (6-4) to advance to the semifinal round, where they defeated UB’s Margarita Kotok and Dayana Agasieva by a score of 6-3. The finals are set to begin at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, as WVU faces UT’s Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola.
The WVU Pink Invitational resumes on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. Singles matches are set to begin at 9 a.m., followed by the final round of doubles matches at 2:30 p.m.
