MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team returns home to host Toledo, Buffalo, Wright State and Maryland in the WVU Pink Invitational from Sept. 25-27. The Mountaineers will sport pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness.
The three-day event takes place at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, with matches set to begin at 9 a.m. each day. This weekend will be the first of two home tournaments this fall season.
The tournament consists of four full flights and one round-robin flight for singles action. It also features three full flights of doubles action.
“It’s nice to play at home and play some solid competition, but at the same time the players don’t have to miss class or exams,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “It’s nice to compete in a familiar environment, and we’re happy to host tournaments here at home. We are happy with the teams coming in to play, and it’s going to be a solid weekend of competition.”
The Mountaineers opened the 2015 fall season in Williamsburg, Virginia, competing in the William & Mary Tribe Invitational on Sept. 18-20.
Following her performance in singles play, sophomore Habiba Shaker was one of four players named to the 2015 Tribe Invitational All-Tournament Team. Shaker went three-for-three in singles action.
Sophomore Carolina Lewis also opened the fall season with two singles victories, and freshmen Abigail Rosiello and Kirsten White donned the Old Gold and Blue for the first time in their careers.
“During the first tournament, we saw some improvement in some of the things that we have stressed to the team,” Lisac stated. “However, I think we still have a long way to go. This weekend is another opportunity for us to put things in play and learn how to compete at the highest level.
“We are going to have some tough matches this weekend, and we are definitely looking forward to seeing how the players will respond in both singles and doubles.”
The Rockets opened the season by winning three of seven singles flights available at the BGSU Invite (Sept. 18-19). Sophomore Sidnay Huck went undefeated for the second year in a row, winning the Flight 1 singles title. The tournament also was highlighted by performances from senior Mackenzie Bowman and freshman Claire Aleck.
The Bulls competed at the Cornell Fall Invite in Ithaca, New York, on Sept. 11-13. Junior Laura Holterbosch claimed a pair of titles at the three-day event, winning the “D” Flight singles crown and the Second Doubles Flight crown with partner Tanja Stojanovska.
The Raiders also opened their fall season at the BGSU Invite (Sept. 18-19). WSU won the Flight 7 singles title with a three-set decision and captured the Flight 3 doubles crown over UT.
The Terps joined the Mountaineers at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational, as it saw action against the Mountaineers in both singles and doubles play. Maryland won three-of-four doubles matches over West Virginia on Friday, Sept. 18, and took six singles matches on Sunday, Sept. 20.
