MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s tennis team tallied nine victories, four doubles and five singles wins, at the William & Mary Invitational, in Williamsburg, Virginia, earlier today.
“We rebounded well in today’s matches and had a much better showing overall,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We have to be consistent in our approach, but I think we are starting to understand how we want to compete as a team.”
West Virginia faced Penn in doubles action, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, winning four of four matches against the Quakers.
Senior Hailey Barrett and sophomore Carolina Lewis defeated Sonya Latycheva and Ria Vaidya (6-4). Junior Kaja Mrgole and sophomore Yvon Martinez grabbed the Mountaineers’ second doubles win of the day with a score of 6-3.
Sophomore duo Lyn Yuen Choo and Habiba Shaker bested Lina Qostal and OJ Singh with a score of 6-2, and freshmen duo Kirsten White and Abigail Rosiello came out on top against Luba Vazhenina and Nicole Berkman with a score of 7-5.
The Mountaineers closed out the second day of the tournament, claiming all five singles matches against Dartmouth, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Mrgole forced three sets to defeat Kristina Mathis with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (0). Barrett also came out on top in singles action. She claimed the last two sets against Julia Schroeder to win the match with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Shaker made quick work of her opponent, as she did not allow Allison Chuang to win a game in the second set (6-1, 6-0). Lewis won in straight sets against Julienne Keong with a score of 6-3, 6-4, followed by another straight set match, as Choo bested Suzy Tan (6-4, 6-4).
The Mary & William Tribe Invitational resumes on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 9:30 a.m. The Mountaineers close out the tournament with a singles match against Maryland, at 11 a.m., at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
