WVU Finishes Day One at William & Mary

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened its fall season at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Virginia, earlier today, with one doubles and two singles victories.
“We had a slow start in doubles today,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “Things did not go accordingly to plan, and we have a lot more work to do tomorrow. We picked up the intensity a little bit going into singles, and hopefully, we will be able to transfer that energy and mindset into doubles play tomorrow.”
West Virginia competed in four matches throughout the course of the day, as eight different Mountaineer players saw action in doubles and singles play.
West Virginia faced Maryland in doubles play at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, followed by a doubles match against Old Dominion, at the Common Tennis Courts.
In double action, the Mountaineers won one of four matches against the Terrapins. Sophomores Lyn Yuen Choo and Habiba Shaker defeated Maryland’s Olga Gaistruk and Olivia Gaudreault with a score of 7-5.
The Mountaineers closed out the first day of the tournament with singles matches against South Carolina and VCU, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
In singles action, the Mountaineers won two of four matches against the Rams. Shaker overcame a three-set battle for her second victory of the day. Shaker captured the first set, but fell in the second. She was able to prevail in a third set tiebreaker, as she cruised past Darya Berezhnaya with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Choo bested Yana Morar in two straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
The Mary & William Tribe Invitational resumes on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 9:30 a.m. WVU takes on Penn in doubles play at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, and wraps up day two with a singles match against Dartmouth, at 3 p.m.
