MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s tennis team travels to Williamsburg, Virginia, to compete in the 23rd annual William & Mary Tribe Invitational from Sept. 18-20.
The William & Mary Invitational will have a dual-match style of play for the second straight year with each team competing in three singles and three doubles matches over the course of three days.
The event will be played at different sites throughout the Williamsburg area, including the Millie West Tennis Facility, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center and the Common Tennis Courts.
“We are very excited. It’s what we have been practicing for every day, and it’s going to be a very good tournament,” said third-year coach Miha Lisac. “We are excited with where we are at and what we have accomplished, and we want to be able to use this tournament to see what we need to improve on.”
The William & Mary Tribe Invitational consists of nine teams: No. 29 South Carolina, No. 31 Dartmouth, No. 49 William & Mary, No. 52 Marshall, No. 56 Old Dominion, No. 67 Maryland, VCU, Penn and West Virginia. South Carolina, Dartmouth and host William & Mary appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament last season.
“It is not about who we are playing against. Right now, we are very interested on how we are going to play on our side of the court,” Lisac explained. “There are a lot of things that we need to work on in doubles, and there are a lot of things that we need to work in singles.
“The most important thing is how we respond mentally to our matches and how we compete. It doesn’t matter who we play against. There will be good teams at this tournament, and that is great for us because it’s going to help us measure what need to continue to work on.”
West Virginia competes in three matches on Friday, Sept. 18, as it faces Maryland in doubles play at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a doubles match against Old Dominion, at the Common Tennis Courts, at 11 a.m.
The Mountaineers close out day one of the tournament with singles matches against South Carolina and VCU, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, WVU takes on Penn in doubles play at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, at 9:30 a.m., and wraps up day two with a singles match against Dartmouth, at 3 p.m.
The Mountaineers close out the tournament with a singles match against Maryland, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, at 11 a.m.
“We want to get better,” Lisac noted. “We have a lot of work to do and that is always going to be the case, but we are looking to make substantial steps forward as a team and individually. This is all in preparation for the spring, but we have to continue to get to better. That is the most important thing.”
