MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (September 15, 2015) – Senior Easton Renwick fired a 67 in the final round to lead the West Virginia University golf team to a 13th-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington.
The Mountaineers matched their first-round score with a 283, shooting one under on the final 18 holes of play, but it wasn’t enough to recover from a shaky second round. They finished the tournament shooting 283-293-283=859 for seven over par. Belmont took home the team title with an 834 (-18), followed by Ohio in second at 835 (-17) and Wichita State in third with an 844 (-8). Host Marshall was 14th overall with a team score of 860 for eight over par.
“We had a really good team score going during the final round, but let a few shots slip late in the day that cost us a few spots,” said coach Sean Covich. “Individually, Easton had a great showing this week. We look forward to getting some practice in before our next event in Alabama.”
Renwick posted the Mountaineers’ first top-10 finish of the season, finishing in a three-way tie for 10th place with a score of 71-70-67=208 (-5). Starting on the ninth hole, he birdied four on the back nine before adding a pair of birdies on the first and second holes to sit six under. However, he bogeyed two of the remaining holes to finish the day four under par.
Alan Cooke carded a 73 to finish two over on the day. He birdied his first hole before scoring back-to-back birdies on the back nine. Cooke stumbled on the front nine, but added two more birdies in ending at two over. He tied for 41st with a total score of 67-76-73=216 (+3).
Jon Ransone tied for 54th place, carding a 71-74-73=218 to finish five over par. Ransone finished two over on the day with a trio of birdies. He was followed by teammate Max Sear, who shot his best round of the tournament to finish T-63rd. After bogeying two of his first three holes, Sear redeemed himself with a trio of birdies to finish one under par on the day for a total score of 74-76-70=220 (+7).
Tae Wan Lee shot 79-73-73=225 to finish +12 in the tournament. Lee bogeyed two holes on the back nine for two over par in the round, tying for 85th overall.
Playing as an individual, Mason Short finished the day one over par to tie for 49th in the tournament. Short bogeyed two of his first three holes, but recovered with a birdie on No. 2. He added another bogey on the seventh hole before adding a birdie on No. 8 and an eagle on No. 11. Short bogeyed two of his last four to finish with a total score of 72-73-72=217 (=4).
The Mountaineers will take next week off before traveling to Birmingham, Alabama, for the Graeme McDowell Shoal Creek Invitational from September 28-29. The event will be hosted by the UAB Blazers at Shoal Creek Country Club.
