MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Fresh off a top-10 victory in its first outing since 1982, the West Virginia University golf team will compete in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, hosted by the Thundering Herd at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington on Monday and Tuesday.
The tournament will tee off in shot gun starts at 8:30 a.m. both days. Teams will play 36 holes of continuous play on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Four of the five scores for each team will count.
Max Sear, Easton Renwick, Alan Cooke, Jon Ransone and Tae Wan Lee will make up the team of five for the Mountaineers. Mason Short will compete in the event as an individual.
“We’re ready to get back to competition this week,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “We didn’t finish like we wanted to at Missouri’s event, so I know the guys are ready to try and redeem themselves this week at Marshall.”
Sear and Cooke each posted a top-25 score at last weekend’s Tiger Turning Stone Intercollegiate. Sear was tied for eighth entering the final round before finishing with a score of 70-73-77=220 (+4) to tie for 16th. Cooke carded a 78-74-71=223 (+7) to tie for 23rd overall.
Ransone also competed last weekend, shooting 76-72-80=228 for 12 over par to finish tied for 43rd place. Lee participated in the tournament as an individual, shooting 90-75-78=243 (+27), while Renwick is looking to make his Mountaineer debut.
The Mountaineers shot 300-294-304=898 (+34) to take 10th place in Verona, New York, last weekend. WVU sat in seventh place after 36 holes, but struggled with the final 18. Host Missouri took home the team title, finishing two under par with a score of 862.
In addition to the Mountaineers and the Thundering Herd, the 16-team field includes Belmont, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Longwood, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Richmond, Samford, Wichita State, Wright State and Youngstown State.
Guyan Golf & Country Club is a par-71, 6,523-yard course located in Huntington. Built in 1922, the course has played host to several impressive tournaments, including the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open Qualifiers.
