MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia University men’s golf coach Sean Covich has added another player to his team prior to the start of the 2015-16 season, as Avery Schneider will join the Mountaineers for his sophomore year.
A product of New Albany High in New Albany, Ohio, Schneider comes to Morgantown after spending his freshman year at Drexel. Schneider played in five events for the Dragons, posting a top-20 finish (T-16th) at the Colonial Athletic Association Conference Championships with a score of 78-74-73=225. He also finished 13th at the Temple Invitational with a two-round score of 77-70=147 and notched his first collegiate top-10 finish at the Leo Keenan Invitational by carding a 72-70=142 for eighth place overall.
Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Schneider won six events while competing for the Eagles at New Albany High. He was a sectional and district medalist in back-to-back seasons, shooting an impressive 68 at the 2013 District Championship.
“I look forward to having Avery join our program and think he’ll be a great addition to our team,” said Covich, who will guide the team in its first varsity season in more than 30 years. “When building a program from scratch, having players with not only the ability but the experience Avery has will help us immensely. With this addition, we now have seven players out of ten that have played college golf before coming to WVU.”
Earlier this summer, Schneider shot a 73 in the U.S. Open Local Qualifier and took 17th in the amateur division at the Ohio Open with a 70-70-73=213. In 2014, he took third at the AJGA Under Armour/Jeff Overton Championship with a score of 71-69-211 and placed ninth at the AJGA ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior, carding a 72-74-72=218. Schneider also finished 22nd at the 2014 Ohio Amateur, 10th at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Rattlesnake Ridge Golf Club and was third at the Columbus Amateur, advancing to the final four in match play.
Schneider will join the team this fall with three seasons of eligibility remaining. The Mountaineers tee off September 6 at the Tiger Turning Stone Invitational in Verona, N.Y.
