MADRID, Spain - The West Virginia University women’s basketball overcame a power outage and slow first half to pick up a 67-42 win over CREF Hola! Madrid at the Canal arena.
CREF Hola! Madrid used a 10-1 second quarter run and held a 29-27 lead at halftime. West Virginia opened the third quarter on a 19-4 spurt and never looked back to seal the victory.
The Mountaineers finished a perfect 4-0 during their European tour. This is the second time West Virginia has went unbeaten in an international tour with the other occurring during the team’s 2007 visit to Australia. Due to a power outage in the Canal building, the two teams played without power and a functioning scoreboard for a majority of the game.
Three players reached double figures with Teana Muldrow registering a game-high 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Freshman Katrina Pardee finished her fourth consecutive game with double-figures scoring 14 points. Lanay Montgomery had 17 points and seven rebounds to round out WVU’s double-digit scorers. Montgomery made 5-of-7 from the field for 71.4 percent. Alexis Brewer and Jessica Morton each contributed with seven points, followed by five from Anja Martin.
“Between playing with lights and no lights, scoreboard and no scoreboard, it was a little bit hectic,” said coach Mike Carey. “I told the players after the game, we have a lot of things to improve at. We have a lot players not playing and threw the freshmen in quickly. I saw a lot of positives. We’ve got a lot to do, but I see a lot of things we can build upon.”
A stingy Mountaineer defense forced 32 CREF Hola! Madrid turnovers compared to just 18 miscues for WVU. The Mountaineers slightly outrebounded CREF, 35-33. West Virginia finished the night shooting 43.2 percent (19-of-44) inside the paint and shot 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three-point range. CREF Hola! Madrid was held to 48.3 percent (14-of-29) shooting from the field and 1-of-9 behind the arch.
In the first quarter, West Virginia opened the game up to a 16-6 lead and held an 18-10 advantage at the break. Midway through the second quarter, Hola! Madrid fought back with a 10-1 run to take a 29-27 halftime advantage. Montgomery led the Mountaineers in the first half with nine points and four rebounds.
CREF pushed its lead to 31-27 before West Virginia reeled off ten consecutive points and produced a 19-4 run in the third quarter. The Mountaineers never let the lead dwindle below double digits for the remainder of the game, securing a perfect sweep in Europe.
