MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rising juniors Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence helped the Canadian Women’s National Team earn three points in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup opener, as the squad defeated China PR, 1-0, on Saturday, June 6, in front of 53,058 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
Buchanan, a defender and native of Brampton, Ontario, and Lawrence, a midfielder and native of Toronto, played the full 90 minutes. The starts were the student-athletes’ 33rd and fifth, respectively.
Buchanan finished with two shots on goal, both in the first four minutes of the match, and Lawrence registered two shots.

A penalty kick by Canadian captain Christine Sinclair in the 92nd minute delivered the victory for the home team, the squad’s fifth all time in World Cup competition.
“Good start for Canada, three points in the bag, exactly where we wanted to be,” said coach John Herdman in his post-match press conference.
Buchanan’s chance came early, as she corralled a free kick inside the penalty box and took a direct shot at China goalkeeper Fei Wang. Her second chance came off the rebound.
Canada continues Group A play against New Zealand on Thursday, June 11, at 9 p.m. ET, at Commonwealth Stadium. New Zealand fell to Netherlands, 1-0, on Saturday.
