Wrestlers Compete at University Nationals

Seven of the wrestlers represented the Morgantown-based Mountaineer Regional Training Center, while Dylan Cottrell competed unattached after transferring from Appalachian State this winter.
“It’s good to have our men competing at high level tournaments in the summer,” said WVU and MRTC coach Sammie Henson. “This time of year is key to building for next season, and there is no better offseason tournament than University Nationals. We had some good wins and look to take this momentum through the rest of the summer and into next year. Our Mountaineer Regional Training Center has acted as a great catalyst to our men’s success.”
After dropping his first bout, Christian Monserrat won seven straight on his way to an eighth place finish at 65 kilograms (143 pounds). Monserrat took a 12-1 tech. fall from Mattheos Lozier of Southeast Regional Training Center in the second consolation round before winning an 11-0 tech. fall over Luke Rowh of Wisconsin. He then won a 16-11 decision over Zehlin Storr of the Michigan RTC before Columbia’s Angelo Amenta injury defaulted to hand Monserrat the win. In the sixth consolation round, Monserrat won an 8-2 decision over Iowa’s Christopher Carton before winning a 9-4 decision over Nicholas Zanetta of PWC RTC. He went on to pin Steve Bleise of Northern Illinois Elite in 2:02 before dropping a match and taking an injury default in the seventh place match.
Wrestling at 61 kg (134 lbs.), Joe Wheeling narrowly missed placing at the tournament, winning three straight before dropping his final two bouts. He took a 9-8 decision from Richard Rios of Legends of Gold in the first round before winning a 13-2 tech. fall over Alexander Rinaldi of Carolina Wrestling Club. Wheeling then pinned Ohio/Bobcat Wrestling Club’s Josh Parrett in 3:39 to advance to the fourth round of championship competition before dropping a 10-0 tech. fall to Nathan Kraisser of Campbell Regional Training Center. He then lost a 16-6 tech. fall to Rocco Russo of Buffalo Regional Training Center.
Cotrell wrestled his way to a 5-2 mark at 74 kg (163 lbs.). The West Virginia native won a 12-9 decision over Brock Wingbermuehle of Sooner Wrestling Club in the first championship round before topping Arizona State’s Jacen Petersen in a 10-3 decision. He suffered a 9-8 setback to Markus Scheidel of TMWC in the third round, but bounced back with a 3-0 win over Northern Colorado’s Beau Roberts in the consolation round. Cotrell tech. falled Austin Weigel of Buffalo RTC, 11-0, before taking an 8-0 decision from Alex Griffin of Boilermaker RTC. A 10-0 loss by tech. fall to Zachary Skates of Gator/OKCU-RTC ended his run in the seventh round of the consolation finals.
Bubba Scheffel, who will be a senior for the Mountaineers this fall, went 2-2 at 80 kg (176 pounds). The two-time NCAA qualifier won a 6-4 decision over Trae Jackson of Bobcat Wrestling Club before dropping a 9-3 decision to Princeton Amateur Wrestling’s Jonathan Schleifer in the third championship round. He the then defeated Joshua Llopez of Terrapin Wrestling Club in an 8-6 decision before a loss by tech. fall to Anthony Pafumi of Rutgers eliminated him from competition.
Rising junior Cory Stainbrook went 1-2 at 61 kg (134 lbs.), winning a 10-0 tech. fall over Ben Vosters of Rabid Dawg Wrestling Club. Ryan Elliot went 1-2 at 57 kg (125 lbs.), taking a 7-5 decision from Drew Dickson of Golden Pride Wrestling Club. Ryan Elliot went 1-2 with a 7-5 decision over Golden Pride Wrestling Club’s Drew Dickson at 57 kg (125 lbs.), while teammate Leonardo Trindade competed at 86 kg (189 lbs.), going 0-2 on the weekend. Parker VonEgidy went 2-2 at 80 kg (176), recording a 7-1 decision over DCAC’s Jason Grimes and a 7-5 win over Michael Coleman of Navy-Marine Corps.
