Kiisk Earns Top Finish at European Games

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University redshirt senior Meelis Kiisk finished eighth in the men’s 50m rifle prone at the inaugural European Games, currently taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Kiisk, a native of Paide, Estonia, shot an 80.2 final score on June 18. He advanced to the eight-man final with a 616.0, eighth-place mark in the qualification relay.
Kiisk also placed 19th in the men’s 10m air rifle on June 16 with a 622.2 mark and 22nd in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions on June 21 with a 1140 total.
Recent Mountaineer graduate Ziva Dvorsak placed 18th in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions on June 19 with a 576 score. The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native also shot 411.0 in the women’s 10m air rifle on June 16 and finished 26th.
Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, shot alongside Kiisk in the men’s 50m rifle prone and finished 20th with a score of 612.8.
Two former Mountaineers had excellent showings for Italy at the Games. Petra Zublasing, a three-time NCAA champion and 2013 graduate, won the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions with a 464.7 mark, a World, European and Finals Games Record. She advanced to the final after shooting 589 in the qualification, a Games Record.
Zublasing returned to the podium alongside Italian and WVU teammate Nicco Campriani on June 22, as the duo finished first in the mixed team 10m air rifle, the final shooting event of the Games, with a final score of 5. The pair advanced to the final of the non-Olympic event after finishing first in the semifinal with a 249.4 mark and fourth in the qualification relay with a score of 519.8.
Campriani, a 2012 Olympic Gold and Silver medalist, also finished second in the men’s 10m air rifle, shooting 206.4 in the final and 629.2 in the qualification relay. Additionally, he shot 612.6 in the men’s 50m rifle prone event and placed 21st.
