Mountaineer Freshmen Honored by Big 12

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Thirty-six of West Virginia’s student-athletes were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team, as announced by the league on Thursday.
Student-athletes who were new, incoming freshmen at their respective Big 12 institutions are eligible for selection.
Oklahoma’s 59 honorees led all schools, with Kansas (50), Texas (48), Oklahoma State (45) and Baylor (41) all recording 40 or more selections. A total of 404 student-athletes were acknowledged for the 2014-15 season.
Thirty-seven of the student-athletes nominated posted 4.0 grade-point averages, including Mountaineers Anna Cokeley (rowing) and Amelie Currat (swimming).
Baseball’s Tucker Cascadden, Kyle Casserly, Kyle Davis and Conner Dotson earned honors, while the basketball programs were represented by Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. on the men’s side and Dominique Simpson on the women’s side. The WVU gymnastics team also earned a pair of selections in Robyn Bernard and Jordan Gillette.
Cokeley was joined by teammates Aria Asselta, Courtney Caugh, Mollie Fisher, Rebecca Gehring, Colleen Giesbrecht, Elizabeth Hooper, Abbigail Rees, Lorena Rose and Jacqueline Spiropoulos in earning the accolade. The swimming & diving teams had eight representatives in addition to Currat, as Madeline Bolin, James Koval, Sammie Guay, Joe Miller, Drew Riebel and Loren Williams also were nominated.
Tennis had a trio of student-athletes garner acknowledgement, as Habiba Shaker, Carolina Lewis and Yvon Martinez were all selected to the team. Madelin Gardner, Rebekah Lafata and Shamoya McNeil were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie team from track & field, while Millie Paladino represented both track & field and cross country on the list.
Volleyball’s Gianna Gotterba and Morgan Montgomery earned selection to the squad, while Joe Wheeling represented the WVU wrestling program on the team.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshman that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
