Third Varsity Eight Boat Honored by VSR

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Members of the West Virginia University Third Varsity Eight boat have been named the Varsity Sports Report Athletes of the Week.
In the morning session, the Third Varsity Eight crew of Irene Darkwaah, Sarah Mitchell, Elizabeth Hooper, Mollie Fisher, Lorena Rose, Addie Dulaney, Marika Hoskins, Kaitlyn Eason and coxswain Courtney Caugh posted a time of 7:55.260 to finish sixth in its heat to advance to the Petite Final at the EAWRC Sprints on Sunday, May 3.
As the No. 11-seed, the Mountaineers finished eighth out of 13 crews and second in its Petite Final in front of Holy Cross, Rutgers and Buffalo with a time of 7:31.231.
The Mountaineers sent out a total of four boats to the prestigious competition, as the EAWRC Sprints marked its 41th annual regatta in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers are idle this week in preparation for the 2015 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 15-17 in Ames, Iowa.
Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia participated in the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio, from May 1-2.
Notes & Quotes: The Mountaineers recorded eight personal-best marks and nine season-best marks over the weekend ... Renee Maisonneuve crossed the line second overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a career-best time of 10:51.10 ... Mariselle McBeam posted a third-place finish in the high jump with a outdoor season-best jump of 1.70 meters ... Brianna Kerekes raced to a 10th place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:10.25 ... Kelly Williams placed seventh in the 1,500-meter run in 4:24.61 ... Amy Cashin followed directly behind in eighth place in a career-best 4:24.84
Coach Sean Cleary: “We had some very good moments this weekend. I was especially pleased with how our middle and long distance girls competed. We still need some fine tuning, but I feel like we can make some improvements in the next two weeks.”
This Week in Baseball: The WVU baseball team will play four games this week, beginning with a midweek contest at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m. … the Mountaineers then travel to Oklahoma State from May 8-10 … Friday’s game begins at 8 p.m., Saturday’s game starts at 4 p.m. and first pitch for Sunday is 2 p.m.
Last Week In Baseball: The Mountaineers went 0-5 last week, including a weekend sweep by No. 4 TCU at Monongalia County Ballpark … WVU fell 3-2 at Marshall on Tuesday, 9-4 at Radford on Wednesday, 9-4 against TCU on Friday, 6-2 against TCU on Saturday and 4-0 against TCU on Sunday.
Notes & Quotes: West Virginia now has a record of 24-22 overall and 6-12 in Big 12 play, dropping its last five games … it was a tough week for the Mountaineer hitters, who batted .215 during the five-game span … freshman second baseman Shaun Corso finished the week batting .400 (6-for-15) with two runs, one double, one home run and one RBI … freshman second baseman Kyle Davis led the Mountaineers with three RBIs, while senior shortstop
Taylor Munden and sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood added one home run apiece … Davis continues to lead the team offensively on the season with a .351 batting average, 16 doubles, four homers and 28 RBIs, while Munden has a team-leading 11 home runs … sophomore right-hander Chad Donato pitched another quality start on Sunday afternoon despite taking the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers are idle until the Big 12 Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17.
Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia traveled to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to compete in the EAWRC Sprints, on Sunday, May 3 … the Mountaineers’ top finishes came from the Second and Third Varsity Eight boats, which placed second in the Petite Finals.
