Gillespie Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After a Big 12 title in the 10,000 meters, senior runner Kaitlyn Gillespie of the WVU track and field team has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.
Gillespie raced to a Big 12 Championship in the 10,000 meters on Friday night, crossing the line in a career-best time of 33:45.56. The time is the second-fastest mark in program history.
The Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, native shattered her previous-best time in the event of 34:10.60 set during the 2011 outdoor season.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers will await the announcement of the official list of qualifiers for the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships from May 28-30 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

Four Mountaineer freshmen earned spots on the podium and posted top-five finishes on Sunday ... Morgantown, West Virginia, native Millie Paladino finished fourth in the 1,500 meters, while Amy Cashin placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Jillian Forsey finished third in the 5,000 meters and Shamoya McNeil recorded a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.

This Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the 2015 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship from May 20-24 at ONEOK Field ... No. 7-seeded WVU will face No. 2-seed Oklahoma State on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m., ET.
Last Week In Baseball: West Virginia qualified for the Big 12 Baseball Championship after taking two out of three games from Texas Tech over the weekend at Monongalia County Ballpark ... WVU defeated the Red Raiders, 6-4, in the series opener Friday night and followed that up with an 8-2 victory on Saturday, before falling 8-2 in Sunday’s finale.
Notes & Quotes: West Virginia earned the seven seed in the tournament this week ... the Mountaineers will face second-seeded Oklahoma State on Wednesday night ... the Championship will make its ONEOK Field debut this year, marking just the third time the event hasn’t been hosted in Oklahoma City ... This Week in Rowing: WVU concluded its 2015 campaign with a fifth place finish at the 2015 Big 12 Rowing Championship.
Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers competed at the two-day 2015 Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17 … WVU finished fifth in the team standings, amassing 52 points … senior Elizabeth Duarte was named to the All-Big 12 Rowing Team … Texas won all five races to claim the Big 12 crown as well as the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship … on Saturday, the squad advanced the Second Varsity Eight and the First Varsity Four to the Grand Finals at Melton Hill Lake … the First Varsity Four crossed the line in 7:58.13, and placed fifth out of eight boats in the Grand Final, just one second shy of Tennessee’s crew … the Second Varsity Eight recorded a time of 7:17.16 to finish in sixth place out of eight boats in the Grand Final.

The resilience and determination displayed by many on this team have been quite inspiring.
