MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Several members of the 2014-15 West Virginia University rifle team, along with coach Jon Hammond and graduate assistant Dan Hermsmeier, will compete at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Fort Benning World Cup, May 13-18, in Fort Benning, Georgia.
Set to compete this week are returning Mountaineers Michael Bamsey (Great Britain) and Meelis Kiisk (Estonia), as well as 2015 graduates Maren Prediger (Germany), Ziva Dvorsak (Slovenia) and Thomas Kyanko (United States). Hammond will shoot for Great Britain, and Hermsmeier will represent the United State.
“The ISSF World Cup matches are the focus of the international competition calendar each year,” said Hammond. “Having WVU team members represent their countries at these matches is a great accomplishment and provides the student-athletes with great experience. These matches also are excellent exposure for our program and provide a glimpse at the quality of athletes who compete at WVU.”
Competition opens tomorrow with the men’s 10m air rifle. More than 600 athletes representing 76 nations will compete in the 10 Olympic rifle and pistol events, with hopes of securing one of the 24 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games Quota places.
A complete recap will be provided following the competition’s conclusion.
