MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore Kadeisha Buchanan is featured on a commemorative stamp in celebration of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
A native of Brampton, Ontario, Buchanan, a defender, is highlighted alongside Canadian teammate Christine Sinclair and Japanese goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori.
"I am super honored to be featured on the Canada post stamp," said Buchanan. "Each year, Canada post stamps tell a story about the country for that particular year, and I am privileged and excited that my story is being told."
Named to the Canadian World Cup roster Monday, Buchanan and WVU classmate Ashley Lawrence are the first active WVU women’s soccer players named to a national World Cup squad.
A fixture on the Canadian Women’s National Team for the last two years, Buchanan, the two-time reigning Canadian U-20 Player of the Year, has started all but three of her 34 matches with the team. She was a 2015 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Additionally, Buchanan has collected NSCAA All-America honors in her first two seasons at WVU, including first-team accolades this past season, and has been named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year twice.
The stamp, issued across Canada on May 6, also is available for pre-orders online at CanadaPost.com.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada opens on June 6, with the championship match scheduled for July 5. The team will continue Group A play against New Zealand on June 11, also at Commonwealth Stadium, before meeting The Netherlands on June 15 at Olympic Stadium, in Montreal, Quebec.
