MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – One month removed from their nation-best 17th NCAA Championships victory, the West Virginia University rifle team visited with West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin on Monday, April 27, at the State Capitol, in Charleston.
Four Mountaineers – seniors Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko and Maren Prediger, and freshman Elizabeth Gratz – met with the Governor, and he presented each with a Certificate of Recognition acknowledging the team’s success throughout the 2014-15 season.
“It was really nice to be recognized by Governor Tomlin. Our meeting shows what an accomplishment this NCAA title was for the team and expresses the pride the whole state of West Virginia has for all WVU sports, including the rifle team,” said Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “We appreciate Governor Tomlin breaking from a busy Monday to meet with us, and it was an honor to visit with him at the State Capitol again.”
Following their time at the Capitol, the Mountaineers attended the Mountaineer Athletic Club’s annual Charleston Scholarship Dinner at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Mountaineers won their third consecutive NCAA title with a comeback-effort at Alaska-Fairbanks on March 14, finishing with a score of 4702 at UAF’s Patty Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. Prediger won the NCAA air rifle title, shooting 598 in the open relay and 205.8 in the final.
