Track DMR Team Named Athletes of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Members of the West Virginia University track and field distance medley relay team have been named the Varsity Sports Report Athletes of the Week.
Kelly Williams, Christa D’Egidio, Brianna Kerekes and Amy Cashin teamed up for a first-place finish at the Penn Relays on Thursday night, finishing the DMR in 11:40.54.
It marked the 120th edition of the prestigious Penn Relays. The Mountaineer relay time edged out second-place Maryland by two seconds.

This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers compete in the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio, from May 1-2. This will mark the final competition for West Virginia prior to the Big 12 Outdoor Championships from May 15-17 in Ames, Iowa.

Notes & Quotes: The DMR team comprised of Kelly Williams, Christa D’Egidio, Brianna Kerekes and Amy Cashin raced to a first-place finish at the Penn Realys in 11:40.54, edging out second-place Maryland by two seconds ... Shamoya McNeil placed sixth overall in the triple jump with a leap of 12.38 meters ... the jump was McNeil’s third-best as a Mountaineer ... the pole vault saw WVU’s Katlyn Shelar finish in a tie for sixth place with a mark of 3.80 meters.
Coach Sean Cleary: “The DMR was a positive moment for the girls. It’s always fun to win a race and for that we are pleased. While we ran well on the DMR, I believe we still have a lot more to offer.”
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 record.
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers (9-13, 0-9) fell in the first round of the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 loss to No. 41 Oklahoma, at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, on April 23.
Notes and Quotes: Thursday was the final match for lone senior Ikttesh Chahal … freshman Habiba Shaker has a team-best 12-5 mark in doubles play as she has teamed up with junior Hailey Barrett as well as classmates Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez and Carolina Lewis throughout the spring … Shaker held a 8-3 mark at the No. 4 position and a 3-1 mark at the No. 5 position in singles play … sophomore Kaja Mrgole tallied nine wins at the No. 1 slot, and Lewis has a team-best 11-3 mark in dual-match play, with victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots … Lewis is the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles win in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record … Lewis also is the 13th player all-time to record a 30 win season with an overall record of 34-21, tying Carrie Gilson in 1982.
Coach Miha Lisac: “We played Oklahoma on Saturday (April 18) and knew what to expect. We learned from some matches and had players that competed well,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac. “Oklahoma competed well and took the second win of the season home.”
This Week in Rowing: West Virginia competes in its final regular-season regatta, as it travels to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to compete at the EAWRC Sprints on Sunday, May 3.
Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers were idle.
This Week in Baseball: The WVU baseball team will play five games this week, beginning with midweek contests at Marshall on Tuesday, April 28, and Radford on Wednesday, April 29 … the Marshall game begins at 6 p.m., while Radford will start at 2 p.m. … the Mountaineers then host Big 12 foe TCU at Monongalia County Ballpark this weekend from May 1-3 … Friday’s game begins at 6 p.m., Saturday’s game starts at 4 p.m. and first pitch for Sunday is at 1 p.m.
Last Week In Baseball: The Mountaineers went 2-2 last week, winning a midweek game against Marshall and then dropping a series against Kansas ... the Mountaineers won 3-2 against Marshall, before falling to Kansas by a score of 3-1 on Friday and 9-5 on Saturday … WVU did salvage the series with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory on Sunday afternoon.
Notes & Quotes: West Virginia was paced by back-to-back home runs from senior shortstop Taylor Munden and freshman second baseman Kyle Davis in Tuesday’s victory over Marshall … the pitching staff two-hit the Thundering Herd, including 14 strikeouts, led by five from freshman right-hander Shane Ennis … the Mountaineers hit six home runs over the weekend, including three in three-straight at bats by sophomore right fielder Shaun Wood … sophomore first baseman Jackson Cramer added two and Munden hit a two-run game-winning blast on Sunday … despite taking the loss on Saturday, junior left-hander Ross Vance continued his excellent season, allowing no earned runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in six innings … Davis continues to lead the team with a .353 batting average, 15 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBIs … Munden leads the team with 10 home runs, while Cramer has eight and Wood has seven … Wood has a team-leading 30 RBIs.
