Rowing Travels to Indiana

| The Mountaineers travel to Bloomington, Indiana, for an informal scrimmage on Lake Lemon against the Hoosiers this weekend. |
“I expect the team to build on last week’s performances. With limited water time we’re far from being truly race-ready, but that’s the case for Indiana as well. The emphasis will be simple and direct: compete,” said coach Jimmy King.
WVU opened its spring slate on Saturday, March 28, with a series of races against Georgetown and North Carolina in Washington, D.C., on the Potomac River. The Mountaineers earned a first-place finish, a pair of third-place finishes and a runner-up finish behind Georgetown and North Carolina with their four crews at the event. The highlight of the day was the first-place finish by the Varsity 4+ boat, crossing the line four seconds ahead of North Carolina’s crew.
The Indiana rowing team checked in at No. 14 in the latest Collegiate/USRowing Coaches Poll. Led by 2014 National Coach of the Year Steve Peterson, the Hoosiers are the third-highest ranked Big 10 team, trailing No. 1 Ohio State and No. 9 Michigan. Wisconsin (18) is the only other Big 10 Program in the poll this week.
Last season, the Hoosiers advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history and finished 11th. Indiana also finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships, the program’s best finish at the championships.
“We scheduled Indiana knowing they would most likely be faster than us based upon past performances and sure enough they are currently ranked at No. 14 in the latest coaches’ poll,” King explained. “The racing that we will do with them over the next two days will be very valuable for our team as we continue to assess and prepare four our key competitions later in the season.”
