MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After opening the outdoor season at North Florida last week, the West Virginia University track and field team will be split between two competitions this weekend.
Some Mountaineers will travel to Athens, Ohio, for the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational on Saturday, April 4, while a select group of West Virginia student-athletes will travel to Stanford, California, for the Stanford Invitational from April 3-4.
The Stanford Invitational will begin at Noon, ET, each day.
“This is a nice opportunity for this group to test themselves against the nation’s very best,” said coach Sean Cleary. “We are expecting to run some very fast times. We travel across the country to compete the best and run fast.”
At Ohio, Saturday will serve as an all-day event with competition beginning at 9 a.m.
“Ohio will provide us another good opportunity to wind up the season,” Cleary said. “This group has just returned from Florida, so having a single day meet within driving distance is perfect. We trained hard this week and will approach this meet as we do all others – go out, compete hard and go home.”
In the Mountaineers’ first competition of the outdoor season, Tori Bertrand placed second overall in the pole vault with a career-best outdoor mark of 3.65 meters. West Virginia’s 4x800-meter relay team of Kelly Williams, Millie Paladino, Amy Cashin and Brianna Kerekes placed first overall in 9:02.81.
