MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team dropped its regular-season finale with a 4-0 decision to No. 10 Oklahoma State at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, Sunday morning.
West Virginia also celebrated the career of lone senior Ikttesh Chahal at Sunday’s match.
“It was a big day for Ik (Ikttesh Chahal). She played her heart out, and it’s good to see that she did well on her senior day,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac. “We are all looking forward to the conference tournament because this is what we have been aiming for all season. There are still a lot of steps for us to take, but we are continuing to get better.”
The Mountaineers (9-12, 0-9) found themselves down early, as the team lost the doubles point to the Cowgirls.
To open doubles, freshman Yvon Martinez and sophomore Kaja Mrgole lost at the No. 3 spot, 6-1, against OSU’s Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez. Freshmen duo Habiba Shaker and Carolina Lewis were unable to overcome OSU’s Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic at the No. 2 position with a score of 6-2.
With West Virginia down 1-0, Oklahoma State (20-4, 7-2) won the next three singles decisions in straight sets to claim the victory.
Mrgole dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to OSU’s 16th-ranked Viktoriya Lushkova on court one. At the No. 2 spot, junior Hailey Barrett suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback against OSU’s No. 106 Adamovic.
To conclude the contest, Martinez faltered at the No. 6 poisition, 6-0, 6-4, against OSU’s Mari.
The Mountaineers have a short week, returning to the courts for the Big 12 Championship from April 23-26 in Waco, Texas.
“I expect us to continue to get better and continue to work on team play. There are things that have been inconsistent throughout the season and this is a time where we have to be at our best,” Lisac stated.
