Swimming Competes at Arena Grand Prix

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Select members of the West Virginia University men’s swimming team wrapped up competition in the Arena Grand Prix at Mesa Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa, Arizona, earlier Saturday evening.
The meet, sanctioned by USA Swimming, serves as a part of the 2014-15 Arena Pro Swim Series. It spanned four days this week from April 15-18.
On Thursday, Max Spencer and Jake Iotte competed in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke. Iotte placed 43rd with a time of 1:08.40. Spencer qualified for the D Final in the event. He placed fourth in the D Final and 28th overall, hitting the wall in 1:06.63.
Andrew Marsh, Jay Hickey, Frank Csonka and Austin Green hit the pool for the men’s 100-meter butterfly on Thursday. Green (58.94), Hickey (58.97) and Csonka (59.41) finished 64th, 65th and 66th, respectively. Marsh qualified for the D Final, finishing seventh and 31st overall in 55.67.
Also participating on Thursday was James Koval in the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Koval raced to a third-place finish in the C Final and 19th overall in 4:39.08.
In Friday action, Andrew Marsh took first in the C Final of the men’s 100-meter backstroke in 57.38. Jay Hickey hit the pad fourth in the D Final of the event in 1:00.38.
Austin Green raced to eighth in the D Final of the men’s 200-meter butterfly in 2:13.40.
On Saturday, Hickey swam a season-best 2:08.52 in the 200-meter backstroke to qualify for that evening’s B Final. He went on to shave another three seconds off, taking second in his section with a 2:05.50.
Marsh also made the finals, clocking in at a season-best 51.23 in the 100-meter freestyle to qualify for the C Final. He went on to take first in the C Final, touching the pads in 50.73. Csonka joined him in the prelims of the event, touching in 53.31 to take 60th overall.
Green took 50th in the prelims of the 200-meter medley, swimming a 2:16.90. Koval swam the early heat of the 1,500-meter freestyle and finished 15th in the early heats with a 16:26.12, which was good for 23rd overall.
