Tennis Falls to No. 39 Oklahoma

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to No. 39 Oklahoma, 4-0, at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts, on Saturday afternoon.
“I thought Oklahoma battled well. I thought they came out and played solid in doubles and singles. We are continuing to look forward to get better and looking for ways to get over this hump. It is just a part of the process” said second-year coach Miha Lisac.
The Mountaineers (9-11, 0-8) fell behind early, when freshman Yvon Martinez and sophomore Kaja Mrgole dropped a 6-0 decision on court three to OU’s Abbi Melrose and Christie Brigante. On court one, junior Hailey Barrett and senior Ikttesh Chahal suffered a 6-3 setback to OU’s Emma Devine and Malene Stripp to give the Sooners a one-point match advantage.
In singles action, the Sooners (13-8, 3-6) tallied three straight victories at the No. 6, No. 3 and No. 1 slots to secure the win over the Mountaineers.
Martinez fell to OU’s Devine in straight sets at the No. 6 slot (6-0, 6-3). At No. 3 singles, Chahal dropped her match against OU’s Melrose with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 1 position, where sophomore Kaja Mrgole stumbled against OU’s Yuriko Lily Miyazaki with a score of 7-6 (0), 6-2. Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
The Mountaineers return to the court on Sunday, April 19, as the team squares off against No. 10 Oklahoma State. Weather permitting, tomorrow’s match will be played outside at the Mountaineer Tennis Courts. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
West Virginia will celebrate the career of lone senior Chahal at Sunday’s match against Oklahoma State.
“We are all going to be playing for her (Ikttesh Chahal). Hopefully, she has a good day in terms of competing. It’s our final home match of the season, and it is an important part of her career,” Lisac stated. “It’s something that we look forward too, and it is a very important day for her.”
