MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team returns to the water on Sunday, April 19, with a scrimmage against Duquesne on the Monongahela River, in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The boats will launch crews from the WVU boathouse in the Wharf District of Morgantown at 9:30 a.m. The Mountaineers will warm-up for the scrimmage rowing nearly 5,000 meters to the Star City section of the Mon River. The scrimmage starts approximately at 10:30 a.m., by Edith Barill Park in Star City, West Virginia.
Due to the informal nature of the scrimmage, both teams will compete in a number of different pieces throughout the morning. The coaches may alter the format and change lineups during the course of the competition.
“Rather than compete in a single 2,000 meter race, we’ll do multiple races at shorter distances. We’ll be able to change line-ups if desired and get in a lot of race-pace work to see what’s clicking and what’s not,” stated coach Jimmy King. “Due to this season’s late start on the water, we’re still searching for the best line-up combination as well as working on race specifics. The scrimmage format of Sunday’s competition will be of great benefit to both teams.”
Last week, WVU traveled to West Windsor Township, New Jersey, to compete in the Knecht Cup Regatta, on Mercer Lake.
The highlight of the weekend came from the Women’s Second Varsity Eight boat, which won the Petite Final to place seventh overall out of 18 crews throughout the course of the two-day event. Entering the last 500 meters, West Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight held off Alabama’s boat by less than .77 seconds.
“Competing at home is very exciting for our team. We typically train in the morning when only the early risers out on the rail trail and those commuting to work see us plying the waters,” King said. “The opportunity to compete in front of our local family and friends is truly valued and appreciated by all of us.”
