MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed the two-day Knecht Cup Regatta in West Windsor Township, New Jersey. The Mountaineers' top finishes came from the Women’s Second Varsity Eight boat, which won the Petite Final on Mercer Lake, Sunday afternoon.
“We had a productive weekend of racing highlighted by the performance of the Second Varsity Eight. Our overall team performance obviously needs to be better, and we’ll certainly address the shortcomings that were revealed this weekend,” said coach Jimmy King.
In the first race of the day for the Mountaineers, the Women’s Third Varsity Eight posted a time of 7:33.29 to conclude its run at the Knecht Cup.
The Women’s First Varsity Eight was second in its heat on Saturday, April 11 (6:47.73). On Sunday, the Mountaineers were fifth in their semifinal round to earn a spot in the Third Final (6:58.44). The Women’s Second Varsity Eight took home a win in Sunday’s Petite Final, finishing in 7:02.19 after placing third in their heat on Saturday, April 11. The Mountaineers beat out Alabama’s boat by only .77 seconds.
The start of the Women’s Second Varsity Eight event was a bit shaky for WVU, but the Mountaineers were able to answer quickly at the 1,000 meter mark. At this point, the Mountaineers created a large gap between Kansas’ and North Carolina’s crew.
At the 1,500 meter mark, WVU evened its boat with Alabama. Entering the last 500 meters, West Virginia held off Alabama’s boat by less than .77 seconds to place seventh overall out of 18 boats throughout the course of the two-day event.
