Tennis Falls at No. 19 TCU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell to No. 19 TCU, 4-1, at the Bayard H Friedman Tennis Center, in Fort Worth, Sunday afternoon.
“TCU played well today. They are playing with confidence and it shows. Our goals remain the same, and we want to get better going into the conference tournament,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac.
TCU (16-7, 6-2) leads the all-time series with West Virginia, 3-0.
The Mountaineers (9-10, 0-7) fell behind 1-0, as the team dropped matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The contest between the duo of sophomore Kaja Mrgole and freshman Yvon Martinez and the Horned Frogs’ Palina Dubavets and Alexis Pereira was abandoned at 5-2 once the team-point was clinched at the conclusion of the No. 2 doubles match.
In singles, West Virginia’s deficit grew after sophomore Kaja Mrgole fell to TCU’s No. 113 Stefanie Tan in straight sets at the No. 1 slot (6-0, 6-0). At No. 2 singles, junior Hailey Barrett fell to TCU’s No. 38 Simona Parajova in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
The Mountaineers picked up their lone point of the match by forfeit at the No. 6 position.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 5 position, where freshman Carolina Lewis stumbled against TCU’s Seda Arantekin (6-4, 6-1). Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were abandoned after the fourth match point was won.
WVU returns home to host its final Big 12 conference matches of the season, as it welcomes No. 29 Oklahoma on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. The Mountaineers will then face No. 9 Oklahoma State on Sunday, April 19. The match against the Cowgirls is set to begin at 10 a.m.
