MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Maryland this afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“As I told the team, this match is a great opportunity for me to continue to evaluate the team and understand where we are as a group and where the individual players stand; everyone is getting an opportunity to play,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It was really good for me to see what these last two weeks of the spring season will bring.”
UMD’s Alex Anthony broke the scoreless play in the 27th minute. The Terrapin forward carried a ball into the box, and as she slid to the ground, sent a hard shot toward that far left post out of Mountaineer junior goalkeeper Hannah Steadman’s reach.
Anthony’s goal followed an excellent chance from junior Kailey Utley. After the Mountaineer forward received the ball just outside the box, she turned and took a hard blast toward the UMD goal, but Terp keeper Rachelle Beanlands stood her ground and grabbed the ball out of the air for the save.
Redshirt-freshman forward Amandine Pierre-Louis had a chance for the early lead in the 10th minute. Junior midfielder Amanda Hill fed the ball up to a streaking Pierre-Louis, but the forward’s shot just inside the box sailed right of the net.
Hill had a chance of her own in the 40th minute, but her shot from the top of the box skimmed the crossbar and went out of play.
Steadman, who played all 90 minutes in the net, made back-to-back saves in the span of 10 minutes, catching Sarah Fichtner’s shot from the penalty line in the 43rd minute before stopping Hope Gouterman’s bouncing shot in the 53rd minute.
Freshman midfielder Carla Portillo fed a nice ball to a streaking Utley in the 68th minute, but despite beating a challenging Rachel Egyed, she could not convert an open look at the net, as her low shot slid past the far right post.
The Mountaineers had two quality chances on back-to-back corners in the final minutes. Junior forward Kelsie Maloney sent a shot toward the left post in the 86th minute, but Egyed made a diving save on the attempt. Sophomore defender Carly Black followed with a header from inside the penalty box in the 87th minute, but Egyed was again there for the save.
The Mountaineers conclude their home spring slate against St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, April 19, at 3:30 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
