MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team faltered at No. 15 Texas Tech, 4-0, at the McLeod Tennis Center, in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday afternoon.
“Texas Tech played well today, and we battled well in singles. Not much went our way, but I thought we continued to battle and create some sort of an opportunity. We are still looking for answers in doubles,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac.
The Mountaineers (9-9, 0-6) fell behind early, when senior Ikttesh Chahal and freshman Carolina Lewis dropped a 6-1 decision on court two to Texas Tech’s duo of Lynn Kiro and Sabrina Federici. On court three, sophomore Kaja Mrgole and freshman Yvon Martinez suffered a 6-0 setback to Texas Tech’s Sarah Dvorak and Katelyn Jackson to give the Lady Raiders a one-point match advantage.
In singles action, the Lady Raiders (16-4, 6-1) tallied three straight victories at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 slots to secure the win over the Mountaineers.
Junior Hailey Barrett fell to Texas Tech’s Gabriela Talaba in straight sets at the No. 2 slot (6-2, 6-1). At No. 3 singles, Chahal dropped her match against Texas Tech’s Sarah Dvorak with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
The match-clinching point came at the No. 5 position, where freshman Carolina Lewis stumbled against Texas Tech’s No. 74 Kiro in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). Other Mountaineers saw action today, but the matches were halted after the fourth match point was won.
The Mountaineers remain in Texas, as the team travels to Forth Worth on Sunday, April 12 to square off against the Horned Frogs. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
