Volleyball to Open Spring Slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coach Reed Sunahara will see his team in action for the first time as the West Virginia University volleyball team embarks on its spring slate, starting this weekend in Ohio.

“I’m excited to see what we can do this weekend and throughout the rest of our schedule,” said Sunahara, who took the reins of the program in early March. “We’ll be playing some quality teams in the upcoming weeks, and I think it will be a good measure of where we are at and what we can improve upon.”

The Mountaineers open spring play on April 4 in Oxford, Ohio, at a tournament hosted by the University of Miami. Cleveland State will also be in attendance at the event.

On April 11, the squad returns to the Buckeye State, heading to Athens for a slate of matches at Ohio University. In addition to facing the perennial MAC Champion Bobcats, WVU will face Wright State and fellow West Virginians Fairmont State.

The Mountaineers will head east to wrap up their spring schedule, traveling to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for a tournament. Also participating in the event will be Binghamton, Cornell, East Stroudsburg and Saint Francis, who West Virginia defeated 3-1 in 2014.

West Virginia is coming off a season in which it saw a 16-14 overall record with a program-record six Big 12 wins. The squad closed the year with a five-set upset of Kansas State, tying for sixth in the conference and one spot ahead of the predicted seventh-place finish. The win over the Wildcats, who boasted a top-25 RPI, helped WVU post an RPI of 65, the highest in school history
