MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team came up short against No. 70 Marshall, 5-2, earlier today at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
“I thought Marshall played a good match today,” said coach Miha Lisac. “We had a little bit of a slow start in doubles and that took away the doubles point from us. We were battling well in singles, but we have to get more consistent in our overall approach.”
West Virginia got off to a slow start, dropping the doubles point against the Thundering Herd. Marshall’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Derya Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya defeated WVU’s Hailey Barrett and Carolina Lewis, 6-2. At No. 3 doubles, the Herd’s Maddie Silver and Rachael Morales played to a 6-3 win over West Virginia’s Kaja Mrgole and Yvon Martinez, securing the doubles point.
West Virginia claimed two wins in singles matches. Mrgole improved to 8-5 in singles this season, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Turhan.
WVU’s Lewis won her second match this weekend to remain undefeated on the season in singles play (11-0), defeating Marija Bogicevic, 6-2, 6-2.
“Overall, it was a good weekend. We had a good start against Cornell. We were doing the right things early, but we need to be consistent,” Lisac said. “It will continue to be a learning experience. We are focusing on getting better heading into the Iowa State match."
The Mountaineers return to competition on Friday, March 13, as they open Big 12 Conference play against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
